please explain

I have been in this hobby for the better part of 30 years
I have had it all, reefs, FOWL, from 20 gallons to 450 gallons
can some please answer this question?

why would someone pay 200.00 plus shipping for a 1 year old used power head when you can buy a brand new one for 235.00?

To save $50 and not get a warranty LOL.. Who needs a warranty when replacement parts are so expensive.
 
I shopped around for a new Mag Drive pump and found one on eBay for $75. At the same time there was a guy on RC who was selling a used one for $90. It was a fairly easy choice to make.
 
I wonder the same thing myself. People post things in the for sale forums with a price and said item is year old + and people buy the stuff when you can buy it new for 20-30-40 bucks more. I don't get it but if someone's willing to pay the price then......
 
I will give you a good reason.

The tank or sump is plumbed for a specific pump. To change pumps may require a bunch of plumbing changes or may not fit the footprint of the original setup. May not even be possible without plugging holes (messy and a new source of failure) in a sump and drilling new ones.
 
I think this fairly common with aquarium stuff. You'd hope that us diehard hobbyists would know better, but have you ever browsed craigslist for tanks? Some people are flat out crazy.

For example: Currently listed at $300 OBO

Lol craigslist is the worse if I see any more $150 20 gallons for $400 55 gallons i'm going to pull my hair out.

I responded to an ad for a custom made EV-180ish skimmer once. The lady who had it had a story behind it.

She responded to a CL ad for a 330g tank setup for sale at like 2AM for about $200 I believe. It turns out in the basement of an abandoned cafe someone was trying to renovate they found two 330 gallon reef tanks in storage. With everything!!

She scored, with the help of a football team of men, 2 beautiful 330g acrylic reef tanks and all the equipment. Her hubby buffed and polished them to like new and now she has a massive in wall divider freshwater tank for her master bedroom.

Never know. I found a $400 new Mac Pro at 3am once. Sold it for $1600 by the end of the week.

Oh I agree you can find good deals but a majority are people who think $50 under retail for a used aquarium is a good deal..... Heck I got a nice aquapod 24 off cl for 75 that came with a pair of clowns.

No plumbing necessary
people get the price because people are willing to pay it
I still dont understand why

I think it takes a while for people to realize the investment you put in reef keeping is purely emotional.

You enjoy it, love it, then cry when you realize you can't sell it for more than 20-50% of what you put into it. And that's where I come in and buy yo stuff fo cheap :)
