please help... clam not opening

i bought a maxama 2 days ago from someone who was breaking down their tank. when i bought it, it was closed but he told me the lights were too strong for it in his tank (he was running 3 x250 mf, and 4 96 watt pc. 2 10k , 2 atnic) this is in a 240 gal. he told me the clam opens up at night when the mh are turned off, he had it for 9 months. i know i shouldnt of bought it but i did. its been in my tank for about 36 hours and it still hasnt opened yet. it is only opened a little, maybe 1/4 inch. it does not react to light but it does react to me when i direct water current insid the shell with my hand. it has also moved twice wihin that time, the same position ase my corcea.

My clams love the light.Thats when they open up.They usually don't open when the lights are off like the person who sold this to you is saying.Did the person you bought this from really have it for 9months . Doesn't sound like he did .Good luck with it all

Whoever sold you that clam obviously doesn't know anything about them. Sounds like the animal was very stressed, but that doesn't come as a surprise given what you've told us so far about the prior owner. Give it time and let it settle in. Just let it be, give it light and in a few days it should recover.

thanks guys. its opened up a little more and reacted to light this morning. i tried to feed it yesterday. it moved once again last night.... hoping its a good sigh.
p.s.
the guy i bought it from seemed like he just wantede to sell it. hopefully it is just stress.
