Make sure your pump isn't stuck, I had this happen when a snail jammed the propeller and it couldn't turn.

Dean, Typically when you hear that noise it's a warning that the pump is either jammed or dirty. Here's the thread where Roger addresses it:

Thanks guys, yes, it generally means the pump is dirty/ seized with calcium and you need to clean it.
