Lavender or fowleri tang? Not sure, I'm not good with smaller tangs.

Either way, both tangs will quikly outgrow a 40b, if not already. I would find them both another home.

I'm aware. I'm getting a 90+ in the next couple months that will become his new home along with the Hippo. Just wondering what type. I got this from my LFS for only $25.

I thought it was a steal at that price but they just called it a tang. Not very accurate.

A 90 still isn't going to cut it. And not qt'ing isn't a hot idea either. Although I guess it doesn't matter as the hippo already looks like it might be sick. When you upgrade, you should treat your fish before they go into the 90.

The hippo looks sick? From that picture, what makes him look sick?

Wow, lil harsh there, and especially not knowing what it is, or max growth, as well as other details on OP's tank.
My first one I got about 4 years ago, it's in a friends 300g, and it's still only about 4-5".
They are smallish as tangs go.
I agree w/ planning for growth of tangs, and one day it may need a larger tank, but a 90g would be fine for a long time IMO

Back to topic.
This is mine very young, about 2-2.5"

And this is now, 3.5-4"

I'm pretty certain your pic is between those stages in color change.

Same tang about midway through color change.
The one you posted still has the orange spot more, most likely lil younger than this.
They go through a period of being more grey around here.

its a lieutenant tang. a LFS has one in a 600g and it looks amazing! i agree exventually itll need a bigger tank but i dont see a problem with you growing it out in a smaller tank and then moving to a bigger one. also in the first pic the hippo looks a lil "dull" with a whitish sheen on it witha few white spots. maybe its the camera or maybe its sick only the owners knows for sure from that pic.

cross off the dull part, it looks vibrant blue (after re-looking at it lol) but i still feel like theres a whitish sheen with some white spots apparent.

Hard to tell to me, is it on the tang, or is the glass just a lil dirty/spotty?

Glass is dirty. It's due for a water change and a glass scrub. If you look at the first picture you can see some spots on the glass.

Thank you so much everyone for your input. I am excited to see my tangs grow. I am especially excited about watching my tenant tang change into an even more beautiful fish.

FWIW, I had my tennenti in a 125 at about 6". He was starting to get a little pushy for the size but attitude was the concern, not actual swimming room/length. If you have the option, I suggest going for a 180g and then not having to worry about all the steps in between.

The hippo's blurry at best in the pic but looks nice and fat. The little tang looks like s/he could use some fattening up.

Hippos and tennentis both get huge, I wouldn't put either in a 90 for much more than a QT period.

Most sites recommend minimum 75-100g min for both tangs.
The hippo will get larger than the tennenti, and OP would need to keep in mind that one day they may need to make an adjustment of some kind, but these in a 90g should be fine for quite some time.
Going off my own personal exp, the tennenti is a very slow grower, like I said, one I had 4 years and is at 5"
My present tennenti I've had 1.5 years, and was larger on purchase than original, but it's still only about 3.5"
That is not considered large or huge compared to other tangs.
If these were naso's or unicorns or similar I would agree w/ you.

Maybe it isn't growing right because the tank is too small?
