Please help ID.............

i don't have a picture but it is unique and rather easy to describe.

they are white tubes that grow out of the rocks. about .25" - 1" long and the tip is bright green. it almost looks like a Q-tip.

my rock has been in my tank for about 18 months and they suddenly apeared a few months ago.

any ideas??

not a feather duster but may be related. imagine a curved Q-tip with a green tip sticking out of the rock.

Some sort of sponge or tunicate? Take a look at this article, half way down you see a picture of Grantia or Scypha sponges...is that close to what your talking about?? Fit's the Q-Tip description at least.

It sounds like a calcareous algae I have seen growing on LR.

You can see a couple of small pieces top right in this pic.

description fits to a tee... I agree with highlander. Have had some in my home tank and the boss had some in his work tank. Requires alot of calcium.

It's pretty much harmless, although can crowd SPS if it becomes too prevalent. As mentioned above, it needs a lot of calcium to grow, and it grows pretty slowly at that. It's easy enough to remove if it grows anywhere you don't want it.

Actually I got a lot of people telling me they liked the splash of green in the tank.

If it gets out of control it can be a nuisance. I had some appear when I had a calcium spike of over 500. It went away when I got it back below 420.

Verify your calcium level (use more than one test kit if possible to rule out kit error).
