I woke up this morning and found this bump/swolleness on my female's head. What do you think it is. How should I treat it?

Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks.

Hang tight....I'm sure someone experienced with treatments will be along soon. You don't have any corals with 'sweepers' in the tank, do you? I'm not sure what would cause a lump like that to just appear overnight. Any info you can give concerning background info on the seahorses, tankmates and such will be a help.

Dave, yea this was one of the kudas we got from you

no sweepers in my tank. Nothing but softies and zoas. Other tankmates are SH's and a Mandarin.

Dave, on a side note...you and Chris need to come by and check out the tank one night.

I'm not as familiar with this sort of fish, but the suddenness of the spot and the inflammation would make me think 'parasite' in the absence of any possible sting. Is there any parasite that preys on seahorses? Copper is a sovereign treatment for parasites, but it might be harmful to seahorses---don't do it without asking someone better informed.

Ouch...close encounter with a bristleworm maybe?

Anyway, if parasites are suspected you could try a freshwater dip to see if that provides some relief for the seahorse.

she's a pretty girl.

it looks like a bacterial infection to me, as to it's cause i'd only be speculating, possiblly small trauma to the area or a parasite of some type. i would isolate the horse to a QT tank as soon as possible. i don't want to alarm you, but there is the possibility that it could rupture and if it does it would be better if it happened in the QT tank and not your display. i know you have a thread over on the org so i don't want to muddy the waters, they're far more experienced than me. just to be prepared, what med's (antibiotics) do you currently have on hand?

a couple of recommendations for you:

1) neomycin and triple sulfa. the triple sulfa can be found at most fish stores or any place that sells the neomycin. neomycin can be found at National Fish Pharmaceuticals or seahorsesource.com. seahorsesource sells a liquid neomycin called Biosol (it's also available at some feed stores if you're in a rural area) and a pre-packaged neomycin/triple sulfa combo pill called Neo3. calvetsupply.com also sells a generic biosol.

2) furan2. you're going to have to order the neomycin and unless you get it overnighted to you, if anything happens you're not going to have anything onhand to treat. furan2 is sold at a lot of LFS and is pretty inexpensive.

3) baytril - prescription only from a sympathetic vet.

do you have an older picture of that area to compare with the size and color it is now? has it gotten any bigger?
