please help me, tank is crashing!

So we're at about the 16 hour mark of your tank having very toxic levels of nitrate. I guess the question is, whats the body count?

A tank does not go from 0 to 180 in a day...

This has to have been going on for months.

Questions that need to be answered...

When was the last Nitrate Test?
What is the Water Change Schedule?
What method of Nitrate Export are you using (Macro, Deep Sand, Water Change)
What is the maintenance routine?
What is the bio load?
How often and What is being fed?
Skimming, if so what kind, how much skimmate?

Beyond getting the nitrates back down, we need to figure out what happened and get some procedures in place to prevent it from happening again. Let's see what we can do to help the poor guy. Nothing is worse than a tank crash. The feeling of helplessness often leads to people getting out of the hobby, and no one wants to see that happen!

If you kept a test log now would be a great time to go back and look and see if any parameters were leaning toward wonky.. and if you didn't if you can even remember anything just being "off" it might help

last test was around 2 weeks ago before this it was at 10. This is why im not sure if the test kit is so accurate its an api test kit.

last water changes were around 3 weeks ago. but they were like 3 20 percent ones.

I use a in tank refugium with chaeto, i hae a HOT filter with a phospahte bag and a filter, a caoralife 125 skimmer and a uv sterilizer.

i clean the glass every day and clean the powerheads / clean the rock etc, all that every sunday.

2 false percs
2 yellow watchmen
1 powder blue tang
1 kole tang
1 Pygmy angel

fed a good sized sheet of nori everyday and fed pellets or mysis every other day.

i prefer a rather dry skim. like coffee balck color but its now set to a wetter one.

you clean the rock? this could be the concern that you are having. why do you clean the rock? and why so much nori? try to supplement with other foods.

Do you have any dead sponges in your tank? just something i thought of, when certain sponges die, they can be pretty toxic.

You mentioned stirring the sand bed. Why would you stir it? How deep is that sand bed. Are you running a Jaubert system?

wen to aquaholics

8 gallons of saltwater( changed waer agian)
amquel +
meds for the bacteria infection on my tang.

Going to test agian soon. Dont worry i will be buying an ro unit off internet soon

i dont kow what a jaubert system is, only sponges that are on some lr. I havent stirred the sand bed in like 3 weeks its 2 inches think. i only did becuase of cyano algae

Bigger. 10% water changes are not going to give you the help you need right now. Granted they are better than nothing, so at least you're taking a step in the right direction.

Try bigger water changes and add some carbon.
I'm not a fan of adding medications to the tanks....

If you are fighting Ich try soaking the food in Garlic Extreme, Selcon, and Zoe.
Use a different suppliment each day when you feed your fish.
The trick is to build up the fish's immune system naturally and they will get rid of the ich on their own.
If it is really bad a cleaner Goby will help too.

Don't ask me how I know........
(ps thanks Carole........)

Once the ich is gone I still suppliment a couple times a week.

Good luck!
