So I had my tank drilled for a single overflow, 1 1/2 inch basically a bulkhead with 90* pvc in it like this

https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/...mDjqJM7kBTjebu9AnILIPW4kdhUU5UsYjx_CiaEBBnSLT

i ran my plumbing and its wayyyyy to loud for my liking. the pvc overflow is probably 3/16 to 1/4 below the water line.

my question is can I quiet this how its drilled now or can I/Should I convert it to herbie. If its possible please help me.

BTW, Nag 7 is my return if it helps
Thanks

You can not do a herbie with a single hole.. Pretty much your stuck with what you have throttling it down will just lead to an eventual overflow. Herbie systems require random adjustments either up or down so a single hole that high up on the tank will lead to issues without an emergency overflow pipe. Without an overflow box to regulate the water height if you try to run a full siphon the level will be lower than you probably want because you have to have the elbow turned down vs up. . Shoot even without throttling it down you risk an overflow. I say minimum 2 holes for an overflow.

Either risk it and deal with the noise or drill more holes . like stated above you should do some research on it and draw your own conclusion.. A single overflow pipe imo is all bad all it takes is one snail and your done.. A box with a durso would be the safest way to run a single overflow imo.

Sorry I'm aware I'll have to drill 1 more hole for a herbie and I'm willing to do that but I wasn't sure If the placement I my single whole now was wrong for a herbie, the threads I've looked at don't har working pictures anymore.

Thanks

You could try the baggie trick. Cut the bottom off of a sandwich bag. Measure the length of the inside diameter of your overflow pipe/90*. Cut the plastic to line the inside of the pipe, maybe an inch longer/ overlap. Leave the full length of the baggie to go down into the pipe. Then either just use a rubber band to hold it on there temporarily, wrapped around the outside of the pipe holding the plastic baggie. Let the baggie go down inside the pipe. Water running down the baggie is quieter than just falling down the pipe. If this works, you can glue it permanently with superglue. If this doesn't help, you could look into a Glass-Holes overflow box. May be able to fit one on there, depending how far your hole is from the edges. Also make sure that the pipe going down to your sump, is at least under the surface of the sump's water level. HTH's

I'd rather not have to drill 2 more hole and plumb them if I could do a herbie or silence this one

You will not be able to silence the device you have implemented, except at an extremely low flow rate. You cannot safely run a siphon without at least two holes: one for the siphon, the other for the dry emergency.

Therefore, if you do not have two holes already, you will need to drill at least one more.

As has already been suggested, do some research into overflow design criteria, what is required of an overflow in a marine system, and drain system design. Once you have some background, it will be easier for us to help you.

Thanks everyone, I'm willing to drill another hole for a herbie. I'm aware of the basics but can't find working pictures. If I was to make an overflow or buy one I could leave my 90* pipe in my overflow for they emergencies correct? Then drill another hole for my full siphon, but how far down?

Thanks again

This is not a 'herbie,' rather the herbie is this type of drain system put in a corner overflow, where there is not as much room. The 'herbie,' in the original thread, was never really well documented. I would say though, that if you are going to go this far, one more hole is not that big of a deal...

That would look pretty good in black acrylic w/ black background. I'd even put the teeth in it, all the way across. I'd raise that water level up above the edges of the frame, ie bottom of the teeth. That would be an awesome overflow.

Thanks, ok so if I buy this Overflow box
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AQUARIUM-OV...433398537?pt=Fish_Filters&hash=item2a3e45f509

and drill another hole say 6 inches away from the first that would work.

would I wanna use the same size bulkhead for the second hole 1 1/2''? I would use the one currently plumbed for the full siphon and just turn the 90 down and place the second just like the fist one was right?

Sorry for all the questions I just wanna get it right
