I got a 1.5"-2", clam, i think its a crocea. I put it in my tank on the bottom, its under a 175w MH about 18" away. right now its looks very pale, and lost alot of color, is this because i just got it or is there something wrong. I will post pics tomorrow. Is there anything i should do to help it. I plan on moving it closer to the light, and feeding phyto.

Add phyto; adding it to the tank, not directly aimed at the clam- or take some tank water in a small container that can hold the clam, add the phyto while the clam's in there, wait several minutes, then put the clam back. It's really a small clam, so will need the supplemental feedings; smaller clams are much more difficult than larger specimens (ime), so you may have no fault in your tank at all. 18" from a 175 is not unacceptable, but closer would be better if it won't stress the clam moving it (i.e. if it's attached). Good luck-

nope its not attached yet, after i went out to dinner and came back it looked much better, i think it was just stress from being taken home from the store. I have some phyto, how often should i feed. Also can i start my own culture from that DT's stuff.

Glad it's looking better- hope it's still in good shape. Lots of arguments about feeding routines, but if you're using the container method, once every two/three days or so should do it- and I'd make sure the water remained warm- some people float a small tupperware container in the tank, lots of ways to go about it. If you're adding it to your tank, I'd dose it about once/twice a week, but that will put a strain on your parameters, and by all means turn off your skimmer and returns for a few minutes after feeding to let it distribute through the tank-

Also- calcium and alk levels are critical for success with clams- which I'm sure you already know-

I have no clue if you can culture DT's; there are threads here somewhere that give fairly detailed instructions on culturing phyto. My hunch is it's not possible, and my opinion is it's a heck of a lot less trouble to buy it, but I've seen people who swear by "growing their own." Hope this helps-
