hey guys. i need help for the sake of my tank. it smells!! it has a musty smell and its stinking up my house. my mom and dad keep on saying that we might have to get rid of it only after 2 months. please help soon!! thanks

Try posting close up photos of any dirty areas of the tank, the equipment used, and the current test kit parameters of your Alk, Ca, Mag, and Phosphates.
Then you might get a usefull answer

A tank should not have a musty smell. Are you sure there is no water on the floor especially around cardboard boxes. Sounds like mold to me.

How big is the tank? Is the humidity getting high in your house? If so... you will need to ventillate or run a dehumidifier.

yes i have been running carbon through it. the carpet around it smells a little bit. but you smell it more when you open up the lid or when you smell the sump (obviously). ive been thinking that its humidity but i dont know. yes i do believe that it could be still cycling. i had a typo its only been up for a month and a half. not two.

I agree with those that have suggested this is humidity. I think you have some ventilation issues. If that is the problem, it is a pretty serious one that you need to fix. That's just not healthy for you to be around all the time.

The carpet smells??? That suggests to me that the carpet got wet and has not dried (or is continuing to get wet....do you have a leak?)

yeh sounds like a humidity issue to me. weres the tank? how many tanks and how big?
how are you refreshing your home air?
you can't just stick a few hundred gallons in a house without some sort of vent/ HVAC setup.

Is there a local reef club in your area of LFS? You might want someone from reef club or LFS to go over and help you solve the problem.

Fish load and type of corals are factors in odor. Fish smell and soft corals also smell. Smelly water and air could mean your tank is not processing all the waste. Carbon works but needs to be changed often which can get expensive. I run ozone on my tank and does a great job of removing smell and organics in a heavily stocked system. But be careful, do your homework because excess ozone will kill everything in your tank!!

Also, water flow plays an important roll in odor. I notice odor from my tank when I shut down all the pumps and the water is stagnant.

It could be humidity or a very slow leak somewhere creating a moisture problem and mold.

Give some more info on your set up and post pics if you can.

No tank details, No proper information

Poser - looking for attention.

Uneducated Newbies don't buy 180+ gallon tanks

I don't see anywhere that the tank is a 180 gal and your entire response is uncalled for.
