Please.. help!

I JUST SAW YOUR THREAD, IJ DEAL WITH THIS ALL THE TIME FOR BUILDERS. THE SHEETROCK TAPE WAS PROBABLY DONE HALF ASS AND THEY GET PAID BY THE JOB NOT HOUR SO THE FASTER THE BETTER. YOU CAN GET A MOLD TEST AT HOME DEPOT TO TEST THE AREAS IN QUESTION. MY TANK HAS AN OPEN BACK SHOVED UP AGAINST THE WALL AND ALL I HAVE IS SALT PIMPLES IN THE PAINT, BUT THE SHEETROCK IS FINE. YOU COULD HAVE A LEAK AROUND A PLUMBING AIR LINE GOING OUT THE ROOF AND NOT NO IT, SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT TO LOOK FOR COULD FIND IT. IF THERE IS ANYTHING YOU MIGHT WANT TO ASK CALL ME.

My tanks evap alot of water, but that is to be expected in AZ. The problem here is static electricity do to the dry climate.

So many variables, from my understanding of mold, it must have moisture, and a breeding surface, sheet rock is a perfect breeding enviroment, it is a perfect wick usually starts on the dimmed, dark side of the infected panel and seeps through.
Now I have seen poorly installed, incorrectly installed, and forgot to install insulation and vapor barriers in attics that would allow condensation to form on the warm side of the that surface. Example, no insulation in attic, vapor barrier was installed over the ceiling joists, causing condensation to pool on inside of the vapor barrier and drip onto the sheetrock ceiling joists below, over time this caused a large black stain that bled through the ceiling sheetrock.

You need a professional inspector and a certified lab to determine why you are having this problem and what stage of events caused it.

I find it hard to believe it is your aquarium, I would however check with your local Home Builder,Home Warranty, HOA, health depart, City Hall, Local Building code inspector as to how and to whom you may need to contact.

Read over your insurance and home warranty policies for coverages? endorsements, exclusions. And dont accept opinions, Soundbytes, You want facts, in writing from the inspector, adjuster, contractor, in writing, signed & dated. Do not accept anything else. No handshake and spit contracts or agreements.
Keep a written log of events, dates, times, contacts & brief summary of the discussion ,etc. ( I know it very well become a second job for you).

If you are going to deal with a contractor, get a minimum of 10 estimates, and accept no less than 20 references that actually prove they have the necessary experience and qualifications, Workmans Comp. Insurance, Contractors licensing and building permits for this repair, call their references, ask questions, after question, Its your house. At anytime you feel you do not understand what is being relayed to you, call a time out and stop the work until you do.

I apologize for the rant, I see this everyday. And see unresolved problems, and innocent aquariums being sold do to causing mold, health issues. In my experience most moisture related problems causes are hidden from view and are from improper construction, poor quality control in the building industry.

Good luck,
scott

Is your house on a slab or do you have a crawl space. If crawl space see if you have moisture under the house. Check the floor joist to see if there are mold on it. If you have a central unit. Check around where the duct connects to the unit. You will need to remove the sheet metal. See if the duct is wet. You still need to check the mold to see that it is not dangerous. Ricky

If you do get a dehumidifier don't expect it to bring down the humidity in a day or two. If there is moisture in the walls, carpet, etc. it will take a little while.
