This was sold to me as a Black Saddleback clown by a local lfs. But when i compared it with my other black saddleback it seems to be missing a third white band at the base of it's tail. So now I'm not sure what kind of clownfish this is.

here's a pic of the little guy

Actually doesn't it look more like the black variant of the Saddleback Clown? A. polymnus?

The clown on the second pics is a black A. polymnus, got him from liveaquaria bout 5 months ago, unfortunately the other clown that came with it was DOA. I've been seaching for a replacement ever since until I found the guy on the second pic, but I'm not sure what kind of clown he is.

its a black saddleback..A. Polymnus.. they all dont have the white on the tail like the second one pictured..i also have a normal pair (brown) one has the white and the other doesnt have it..

The first clown looks like it too, just missing its last stripe on the tail. You can see a bit of the yellow on the heada nd a bit of yellow on the fin as well. Whether or not the yellow coloring helps determine what it is, it looks more like a Saddleback than the Black Occ. Clown

i second, third, fourth or whatever number it is the black saddleback vote... most of the brown saddlebacks i have seen dont have that third stripe, so i dont suppose its uncommon for that to happen in the black ones (although i have to admit yours is the first ive seen with my own two eyes.... in a picture.... over the internet.... lol)

You really need to get that powerstrip in the first picture out of the tank. Electrical current and saltwater don't mix.

Ok, just kidding, but the pic made me do a double take.
Back on topic, Could that third stripe be a juvenile color that goes away with age?

I agree. I've had two exactly like the first picture. The male had a faint stripe on his tail when he slept but at no other time. When they are juvinile they usually have the tail stripe, but it usually fades with age.
