No offense, but EZ's tank looks like it was just put together for thispic. I see no growth, just live rock with frags newly placed on them. Icenine, on the other hand, has a tank with a lot of growth and diversity. My vote is for Icenine.

well i think you are comparing two different set of corals with different growth rate/patterns... you don't see how nicely the acros are encrusting the plugs? many of the montis and acros you see in his tank might not grow as fast to cover the entire LR..also he does have great diversity, you just gotta look closer..especially for an AquaPod! the way ez's tank looks is part of his theme for the tank.

ez's tank has plenty of growth, and the frags are far from just being newly placed on the rock. he has one of the nicest sps nanos i've seen so far, if not the nicest. dont get me wrong icenines tank is awesome too, but you dont see many ap24's that are sps dominant, and when you do, they dont look half as good as his.

I wouldn't make any comment if I have no idea what i'm talking about.

EZ got my vote

Sure. The tank looks good but it is not showing the maturity that icenine's is showing. I can take acro frags that are growing onto their plugs from one tank and stick them in another tank with some aquascaping and *bang* instant Nono of the Month winner. The putty used to fasten the plugs to the live rock is still pure white with no algae growth. You don't see that?

like i said, they were not just placed on there theyve grown from tiny frags to what they are now, if you have been following his tank like a lot of us have you wouldnt be sayin that he just took frags from a different tank just for ntotm winner...hes gonna win because most of the people know that he knows what he's doin and puts a lot of work into the tank.

That's great. I am not passing judgement on his knowledge, abilities, or time spent on this tank. He has submitted his tank for critical review by his peers and therefore I am giving my critical review as compared to others that have been submitted. We all have our opinions, and with the exception of Bladez, we can all agree to disagree in a polite and respectful manner. My opinion is that this tank is not ready for prime time and needs more growth. I am not one to get all stiff over an SPS only tank. I am into a more natural looking tank with a diversity of organisms. Icenine's, in my ever so humble opinion, has created a much more diverse ecosystem that shows more growth.

If that is your perception, then I can see where you are coming from, but I did not make a statement that he threw this together for this picture, I said that "it looks" like he threw it together for the picture. That is not an accusation of whether he did or not, it is an observation that the tank does not look as mature as other tanks in the contest and that it is, imo, not ready for prime time.

Obviously, the majority disagree with me.

jglackin - thank you for the comments on my tank. :) to answer a few of your questions, i did rearrange some coral pieces for the picture like the teal stag in the left middle with putty. i can assure you that 90% of my sps pieces have grown from 1 inch or less. the mini colonies you see were mere nubs of corals at one point, i have the original frag pictures somewhere in my old computer if you would like to see. if you see my tenuis picture, that was a 1 inch frag i got from rscott, who i met from this forum. he has lost his whole mini colony, while mine grew from his small frag (i gave him a frag to reseed), but he can attest to the growth of my own mini colony from his frag.

i also scraped a lot of coralline for the picture as i highly prefer the clean look, but i can assure you the rock, back wall, shells of my snails and hermits are encrusted to the max as the calcium levels in the water column are abundant. the back of my liverock are filled with sponges, mini sea fans, and a lot of creatures i cannot identify, as i try to keep the phyto and zoo plankton in the system present, though it may not be adequate in most cases.

my tank definitely doesn't look as mature as Icenine's tank, and it shouldn't be as his tank is older than mine. his tank was one of the aquapods i looked upon during the creation of my tank, but it was in the early stages that i decided i wanted to do what most wouldn't, and that is the sps route. i hope you can appreciate the time and effort i placed in my system, as sps take a considerable amount of time, effort and toil, much more so than your conventional corals. 5 clams (3 being over 5 inches), sps mini colonies and frags, 2 fish, and some other corals is a very difficult ecosystem with only 24 gallons to work with, not to mention a very expensive one to keep. there have been numerous occasions where the daily maintenance have made me reconsider what i was doing. if you take a look at my clams alone, those are some VERY hard to come by (and horribly pricey) specimens, (black and whites, blue teardrop). Only a crazy nut would would place them in a nano unless they had the dedication and diligence to upkeep their beauty. they are the pride and joy of my nano, and i hope people here can appreciate their beauty just as much as i do.

once again, thank you for the comments, and i hope you have a better understanding of the amount of effort and care i have placed in this tank. have a nice day! :)

EZ,

Thank you for the post, however, it was not necessary. I am sorry that you feel that you needed to defend yourself. I was not accusing you of anything. My opinion is that your tank is not as developed in growth and biodiversity as Icenine's. I don't doubt that your SPSs are growing as you say and they are a lot of work, but aesthetically, I don't get all gooey over just SPSs. I like a tank that represents the more natural biodiversity of the ocean.

I have a 12 gallon nano. I know what you are going through. One day everything is looking great and you feel like the king of the aquarium world. The next day all hell is breaking loose and you feel like an incompetent newbie. Your tank is much nicer than mine, unless you consider red slime algae biodiverse, but then I am not submitting mine for the nano of the month. When I do, feel free to be as critical as you feel necessary.

not defending, just sayin :)

btw, my tank is trying to replicate the hard coral reefs of the Philippines, in which I love scuba diving and skin diving :) almost pure sps
