Plucked it! Chaetodon Octofasciatus

You better be at the top of your game, judging from the warnings on-site.
Might this fish do well/better in groups, or pairs?
Daniel.:hmm4:

Hey BTW. I don't think it's reef safe.
Wrong forum.:eek2:HAHAHA.

Hey! Post #206. Is this my namesake post or something?

Definitely not reef safe, definitely going into a FOWLR. He'll be joining my Flavirostris and Rainfordi, which seem to be doing well so far.

Generally, butterflies don't do well in a pair, unless they are collected that way. Different species tend to be pretty communal with each other, barring the occasional trouble maker.

I do have a "pair" of pyramid butterflies, which I hope to turn into a group of 5 at some point though. Of all the butterflies, they seem to be the most apt to accomading each other as a group.

I'd like to have a school of raccoons. In the wild, they're always seemingly photographed in schools of 30-50.
My sump will be 400 gal plus with mostly live-rock. I hope to make it more of a fish-only sump.
Have you ever tried feeding yours corals or sponges? If so, what kind?
Daniel. :wildone:

Eating LRS Fish Frenzy on the first try. Hats off to Kevin Kohen and the DD team, they really seem to know how to get these tricky fish to eat.

I'll try to get a video posted later tonight, but i'm headed to the lake soon and that may not happen until tomorrow.

Well it took a little longer than expected to get a video posted. Fish has been eating consistently, mostly LRS and little neck clams.

Here is a video of him/her eating clams. I came back 30 minutes later and it will still picking away at it. This is a very inquisitive little butterfly, does a lot of checking me out.

I thought he was eating pellets?

Imo, the vendor should have a short video attached showing these fish eating.

It's doesn't take an expert to throw in the foods they say the fish is eating.

You need experience to know enough to feed them often during the day and be more aware of tankmates and environment, but that's about it.

If it isn't eating then of course it's going to take an expert to figure out a way to get them to consistently eat.

He picks at them, but without question prefers frozen foods. Pellets are not part of my normal feeding program, so I honestly havent been feeding them much. I know they are convenient, I just prefer the more natural foods . He will at ON prime reef flake as well.

I might agree if it wasn't from DD, in my experience their reputation precedes them and I tend to take them at their word when they say a fish is eating. I know some people have had issues in the past, but I'm three for three with them.

Like I said before, I'm not a huge fan of pellet food and flake foods. I keep them on hand, I'm not really sure why though. I like to feed my fish the stuff they might encounter in the wild as much as possible, (yes I know this fish is a corallivore) and I realize that LRS and a clam aren't typically on it's diet.

Either way, he seems in great health and has a great appetite.

Nice grab, I was eyeballing it myself, and if my qt tanks weren't full up I would've went for it... Glad to see its eating well.

I was just thinking I should put one up. He's doing great, has a huge appetite.

I'll put a couple pictures up tonight, I'm going to start the first proactive cupramine treatment this evening.

Sorry, did a water change last night and just didn't have time to take any pictures.

I'll get some up tonight or this weekend at the lastest.

By tonight, I mean 4 days later.

This little guy is still rocking and rolling. Been through two preventative treatments of NFG, planning to start the first of two Prazi treatments tomorrow. These are all preventative meds as I have yet to seen any signs of infection, disease or parasite.

Still not as fat as I'd like, but I'm working on it.

Another...

He's so CUTE.
I want one.
I suppose I should really leave his cute kin in the ocean if he's expert-only, though.

He needs many feedings per day. I try to get at least four per day and as many as 6 - 8 on the weekends. I also leave a clam in his tank a couple times a week, so he can graze continuously.

It's definitely not a fish for everyone, but if you can source one that's eating and are able to feed often, they are definitely keepable.
