plumber putty reef safe?

Got a leaking bulkhead. Tried thread tape and it helped but it's leaking elsewhere too. It was leaking from the threads but also where the nut meets the tank wall. This tank is being torn down in less then 3 weeks so I really don't want to start hacksawing off the plumbing to change the gasket. If I stuffed plumbers putty in to fill behind the nut do you think that would risk my animals?

I've used it on a skimmer mod without problem but not sure if it will solve your problem... can you lower your water and use aqua silicone instead?

if your are tearing it apart in a couple weeks just use some reef epoxy and crazy glue…

i don't think i would leave plumbers putty in the tank

1) Plumbers putty may or may not be ok. For the most part it is a mixture of limestone, clay, talc and oil. The oil may be linseed or whatever or some other hydrocarbon oil. The oil is where you could run into issues, as it could be just about anything.

2) You can not seal a bulkhead from the nut side, the gasket goes between the flange and the tank wall. If water makes it to the nut side then it will leak between the nut and tank wall AND through the nut threads.

well you "can".. but its not gonna be pretty :)

I have sealed MANY different leaks using reef epoxy. the best way is from the inside, not from the bottom of the bulkhead.

didn't you just post this same question last week or so?
oh.yes you did

Yes, I did post it before and it was recommended to use the tape and someone said putty. I tried the tape first as it seemed the least likely to react. The other thread was not about the safety of plumbers putty and that's what I want to know about.

Anyway, the tape helped but didn't solve the problem (thus the new question about being more aggressive). However after a day or two with the tape it's so much better it's not an issue anymore. A properly placed towel is all I need and it's good to go until I tear the tank down.

Thanks for the input.
