I was wonder if you could use weld on to join sch 40 plumbing pipes? I wasn't sure if that would be ok or not. Also if I did how long would I want to let them dry? And if I used plumbing cement how long would I want to let that dry?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

I'm not sure what weld on is, and I'm not sure what the advantage would be of using it vs. PVC cement relative to the chance that it might react with the pipe or otherwise cause a problem.

I would use PVC cement designed for sched. 40 piping, and not put it under pressure or run water through it until the manufacturer's recommended curing time is reached, which should not be too long. PVC is quick and cheap. :)

Depends on what type of weldon you have If it is for PVC, which I think you are talking about it will work fine, if it is for some thing else, it might not work very well depending on what active ingredients it has and what you are trying to bond.

Probably work. But why? PVC cement is cheap and cures quickly. Many posters on here report no issues with pressurizing in under an hour from application.

Just use pvc cement. It's the right stuff to use. Use the right glue and you can start using the plumbing with 30 minutes.

So IPS Weldon is just a brand of PVC cement? Never heard of it, so just curious if there's any advantage to it...

Guys.. lets step back here before everybody gets confused.

IPS is a manufacturer of Solvent Cements, just like Oatey and other companies.

IPS makes a broad product line that includes solvent cements designed for everything from acrylic, to lexan, to PVC. Weld-on is a line of products made by IPS. Each product is a different compound. The Weld-on #3 is for acrylic and is not AT ALL the same product as Weld-on #700 PVC cement. They CAN NOT be interchanged.

The OPS questions was not clear. He asked of "weld-on" could be used to glue PVC. That is like asking if Kool-Aid is cherry. Not all Weld-on can be used to glue PVC and not all Kool-aid is cherry.

Weld-on PVC cement is not readily available at most local stores. Oatey products are. So I suspect the OP is asking if it is okay to use Weld-on acrylic cement (#3, #4, #16, etc) for PVC. The answer is NO. Unless you have Weld-on 700 Series PVC CEMENT, then you can not use it on your PVC plumbing.

I wanted to thank everyone for their in put. I can now say first hand that weldon #4 doesn't work on PVC piping. It makes a tight connection but under any pressure at all it just pulls apart. I guess I'll just use the PVC cenment.

Sorry I wasn't more specific on the type of weld.

Thanks again.
