plumbing

Greetings- I'm wondering if running 1.5" to and from the tank will reduce head loss if I've got to step down to 1" at the tank. If so, is there any table for calculating this? I'm looking at putting the sump in the basement.

Hmm, interesting question. I don't think I'd bother running 1.5" part of the way. How long a run is needed?

IF you are splitting the 1.5" into two returns at the tank, it'd help. Otherwise the gain restricting it back to a single inch retrun wouldnt be much.

14' vertical ? Hope you are planning a good return pump to get it there and a good size sump to hold the water in case of a power loss.

ya a 14 foot vertical would be a pretty long ways. You will for sure need a strong pump and a large sump. Although it has been done. Good Luck

Thanks for the feedback. Yup, planning on a sizable pump, but you're scaring me with the power failure question. Wouldn't sump volume increase to include the volume in the pipes (both sides) plus whatever is in the tank down to the level of the durso drain? Anyway, part of the reason for putting all this in the basement is to have the room for a large sump.
I could do a second return, but since I've got a corner flo tank with only 2 pre-drilled holes, I'd have to hang it over the side. Will that work??

You "could" do that but if you've planned a sump large enough for the volume of the return plumbing and down to the level of the durso, you should be fine. I'd calculate the volume needed and add 15-20% for safety. Dont be scared, be informed and make good decisions from that information. Makes it easier to sleep at night even when you hear the power go out !

Henry-
OK I understand about having a safety cushion, good for the house, the fish, the ZZZ's, but I wasn't clear. First question: BOTH the line to the sump and the return line to the tank would empty into the sump in a power failure, yes? Second question: In order to increase the GPH without having too much velocity, could I have a larg-ish return line that T's into two one inch lines, one going into the pre drilled hole in the tank, the other hanging over the side of the tank?

Yes in a power outage all the pipes will drain into the sump. I understand your second statement too. a larger line T'd into 2 1" lines returning into the tank.

IMHO, I'd go with the one line and make sure you have a good set up to create flow in the tank itself OR you could do a "manifold" where the return makes a loop at the top of the tank with various outlets pushing water in different directions from the top of the tank.

If you search manifold or return manifold here on RC I am sure you could find some pics, I know I have seen some.
