my xenia i have has been doing great until last friday
i suspect it being my low salt level
it was at 1.022 and since then ive been raising it slowly ever since hoping that will do the trick

These are the "canary of the coal mine" something in your water is off.......high alk always messed with mine.......

But it doesn't look "that bad".....I don't get excited until they turn yellow and have little tufts of cotton where the "fingers" have melted away and it looks like a cotton ball on a stick. If you fixed your SG problem, which may or may not do that....check other params esp ammona, Nitrate, Alk to start

ill be checking my parameters to be more updated
thnx ill take the alk into consideration
can they come back to normal?

Yep....and become a real pain when they get all up in the powerheads......youll love it!!!!

On second thought, how long after the lights came on did they look like that?

In any case I am pretty sure that I know someone that has some of that stuff in his tank that is getting long in the tooth that can help you out if you loose them.......but I don't think we will have to go there.....I am confident that yours will survive!!!

so raising the salt to 1.025 would solve the case or just maintaining the params steady?
its sooo cool when its all puffed up and pulsing
ive had some before and did the same thing and died

well i guess you were right
my alk is at 3.89 meq/L
my calcium is at 620
amonia 0
nitrate and nitrite 0
pH 8.4
i think its beacuse i added the b ionic doses today

If you alk is spiking like that when you dose, cut the dosing amount....you really want to pick a number like 9dkh or the meg/L equivalent in the middle of the "acceptable range" to give you wiggle room for just this situation or if you miss a day it doesn't tank, and only add enough B-ionic daily to offset the alkalinity that has been used up daily.

Either do a water change or let it drop on its own, the Ca needs to come down also.

As with the salt I pick a range in the middle and try not to push either edge of the acceptable range.......most set there SG at 1.025, but with a refractometer....if you use a swing arm....it could be off and higher than you really think......in addition, if you topoff by hand and have a smaller tank.....your SG could be raising to 1.027 for instance which could be getting into the "danger" zone.......I say pick a nice "safe" moderate number until you can control it without any problems I would say 1.023...used it for quite a while and don't see any ill effects....that way you have a little wiggle room for error.......which you are still working out.

Your meq/l are about right, but tha Ca is way too high. Shoot for about 420-450 ppm. Try to maintain about 1.025 s.g., and don't let it climb too high before you top off. IME, stable parameters are more important than specific numbers. What's your tank temperature running at? My Xenia tend to pulse more at slightly higher temps in the 80-81 range.
