Good job with the attachments. If you'd like the pic to appear full size in the body of your post instead of as an attachment, upload the pic to an image hosting service such as Photobucket and then paste the IMG tag info into the body of your post.

Thanks for info, I am planning to do that but never get around to it.

What is your avatar?

What is your avatar?

Reef Bass,

What is the coral in your avatar? Looks like a war coral.
Did you take the pic? If you did . . . VERY NICE job! But that, of course, would mean a macro pic war :uzi:

Hi Bela.

Yes, I did take that picture, thank you. It was of a single polyp on a green acan lord.

I very much enjoy macro pics, especially corals. I have about 100 of them on my website.

I think insects are awesome macro subjects as well. Recty did a nice image stack of a spider not so long ago.

And just to fire off a few rounds in closing:

I should have keep my mouth shut, I show up with an Uzi & you pull out a Gateling Gun . . . . nothing like getting you a _ _ whooped in public!!

I am VERY VERY impressed, I know a bit about photography, & realize how difficult it is to produce publishable shots like yours. I concede this round! Had I know what I was getting into I would have shut off all 7 of my power heads. I case you missed it, that was an excuse! I am teacher and contrary to common belief it is a huge amount of work, leaving little time for other fun recreational activities like photography (excuse #2) :) I like a challenge, I do not think I will win this battle but I am going to try to make some time to set up some good shots. March Break, I think called "Spring Break" in the USA, is coming up so I will be looking for you then.

I also appreciate the fact that you were nice and non judgmental in your response, even though my shots are crap compared to yours. It is important to promote young photographers & to promote the hobby/vocation. Well done.

Your edge sharpness & depth of field is incredible for the level of magnification, did you use a flash? What lens? What aperture?

I will fire a few rounds back at you even though some may only be rocks, but on the whole better than the last batch.

Thanks Bela for your kind words.

I hear your point about life getting in the way of pursuing photography and other interests. That happens to you too huh? ;)

You are too hard on yourself! I like the colors and visual interest of your shrimp shot. I can totally tell you've got the macro bug and you're off to a great start! You're way ahead of where I was when I first showed up to this forum. The help and advice I have received on this site has had a hugely positive impact on both my corals and my photos. I am very grateful.

Reefing can be quite challenging by itself, so having good looking corals to photograph is an accomplishment right there. Then getting a decent photo which accurately represents one's visual experience can be an additional challenge. I find it very rewarding when it all comes together.

And yes, turn off your pumps when you're getting ready to shoot some pics! Debris will settle and many corals will inflate or extend polyps or both.

I use the Canon 100mm macro lens and a tripod. Many exposures are longer, up to 2 or 3 seconds in some cases, which allows me to use a low ISO, a midrange aperture and no flash.
