I'd say it's bad and you probably need to start over. Are the pods still alive? I'd move them if so. Also, you'd probably be good with just phyto and not use the algae pellets.

In most cases a smell test can tell you the truth. I'm sure it didn't smell like roses, maybe not even the rocks at high tide in the Delta, but if it smells FOUL in capital letters it's probably best to throw it away. ;)

BTW do you have any specialized feeders in your tank?

Nope it's just a basic 1 gallon tank with a heater 1 piece of live rock and air bubbler

Does it smell foul? In that size that without the proper care it's easy real to smell foul.
Ya real foul like smelling out my basement foul. Live rock turned black. I think the phyto algae water combo was too much

I've never cultured pods but i would think just a very small amount of phyto daily would be enough. You probably don't even need phyto, just use a small light to grow film algae. Maybe do a small water change with your old water from your display to add some nutrients for the microalgae to grow.

FWIW I used to get that DT's Phytoplankton back in the day. Usually it was in the fridge, (had a distinctive smell to it) but that stuff on the shelf stunk. Stink is stink though. You should be able to differinetiate between the two. :thumbdown
