pods in rough vs. fine substrate?

i have crushed coral substrate and see many "pods" crawling in between the substrate and was wondering if this type of substrate promotes more "pods" than a fine substrate because of all the "nooks and cranny's".

Pods, such as the grammarus amphipods do prefer anything they can cling too, such as a crushed coral substrate. This type of substrate also tends to catch more detritus vs. a finer grain substrate, which helps feed the critters better. So yes, it probably would promote more noticeable pods. You can achieve similar effects by using rubble rock in a refugium or even using stuff like bioballs floating in a pod culture tank. They defiantly like the nooks and cranny's.

Rough substrate contributes to larger populations of the bigger pods like amphipods. Smaller substrate will nuture smaller zoo-plankton like copopods.
