Pohnpei clams and disease...

Get on, Ads!

This is my goal too, at least with some species. I have always wanted to raise clams in my tank, but I heard, from larvae to clam, they need laboratory conditions. If you have any info on how this is being done in home systems, please respond here or we can start a new string!

The only success I have had is with mushroom corals, pulsing xenias, and a bubble-tip anemome! All this was done in my first 32 gallon reef! I got rid of the 32 and I now have a 60! Imagine the possibilities......

Take care and Happy Reefing!

peterlin98, how about an update on the clams. Are they still doing well? Are the rest of your clams doing well?

My clams are fine. Because of this thread - I was checking my record. This clam has been with my since October 12, 2002. Almost 6 months now - that's something considering that this is a wild clam from chuuk.

My other clams purchased at end of September 2002 MACNA- 6 farmed raised - from Harbor Aquactics are doing fine too.

ponephei clams that I received on the 1st of April and doing great. They are placed on sand - until they are attached to clam shell buried in sand. Then I will move the shell/clam to the rock or tray.

Seamonster-Shoot me a PM and we can talk.

Oscarbeast- my 10 clams are doing great. They're being fed T-Iso every 3rd day. They arrived on Mar 23 and look even better now.

I will be purchasing a Ponephei Ultra Maxima from Jeff's Exotic as a "Test" clam. Jeff is giving me a great price on one for this 'expirement'. I'll update you all on how it goes.

I know Jeff very well as I have done business with him since he was working out of his old store years ago.

Asked him about the Ponephei clams about a month ago and he said that he has not had a problem with them since last Sept.

It looks like there has been a lot of experiments in the past several months and all reports seem to be positive. I guess you have to see for yourself. :)

Yeah Jeff is a great guy. I've known him since he had a small little warehouse garage in Torrance.

Sadly, The clam disease whipped out an insane amount of clams for him back when the disease was rampant.

His clams look great right now. Let's hope they stay like that.

Funny you mentioned it, I just picked up a 3"- 4" gold maxima from Jeff's today. I like the pattern, and it was pretty darn cheap. I got mine for $25! Is this the rate for gold maximas? I thought it was a pretty good deal, so I picked it up. It hasn't opened fully yet, so I'll see it in the morning.

Yes that is the place :) Much larger now.

After seeing Peter post and some others that are having success keeping these clams, I have decided to try 2 so ordered a few from Barry at Clams Direct. Will be here next week. He says that he has put some of them in his personal tank with some Marshall Islands clams and all is looking great.

Will keep everone posted.

Well it seems that many people are having good luck with these or are willing to try them now. It now looks like it might be simply a matter of buying from a reliable source that buys them from a reliable wholesaler.

Fish and other creatures catch diseases all the time. How may of you have went to an LFS to see nasty conditions that disease spreads like wildfire? If you go into an LFS and see a tang that has a disease, does this mean that you don't buy this tang somewhere else because you think ALL tangs are diseased? Wholesalers are the same way. Some of them are nasty and have diseased mixed animals then distribute them around to various LFS. Other wholesalers make a point of keep their animals separate and their holding tanks clean and disease free.

It would be nice if we could know the wholesalers behind our sources for buying livestock for this very reason. Many of them are not willing to share this information for fear of competition. That being said, it might be wise to be careful from whom you buy from. I personally would not purchase from a vendor that has bought diseased clams in the past, even if they don't carry the pohnpei clams.

Also, from what I have been hearing from various sources, is that collecting methods for clams that will be kept in the hobby are improving. Many of these clams were collected for the food market and the clams were collected with this in mind. Some of these collectors have now been educated in proper collecting methods so that the clams are not damaged in such as way that they will eventually die.

I also understand there is some scientific research going on to determine the exact cause of death of some of the problem clams. There is an attempt to determine the exact pathogen if there is one and origin. It is possible this if there is a disease, it is something that originated in contaminated wholesaler vats and not in the wild.

Things seem to be looking up and if things keeping looking this way, I might be buying in the next few months. I am not ready to jump on the bandwagon just yet.

Good luck to everyone that has purchased them and keep us updated. For now I am happy sitting back and watching for a while and enjoying the strong stench of hypocrisy. :)

Oscarbeast-
I don't know of any confidentiality issues with disclosing livestock distributors. I can safely say that the Ponape/Pohnpei clams that have been spoken about for the last month from different retailers came from the same distributor including mine.
I completely agree with finding a reputable and knowledgable source for your livestock. It seems to me from reading these responses that most selling these amazing creatures are willing to go to great lengths to ensure their viability.
I think that you have access to some incredible resources on the BB's. This thread and others are proof of that. Adam

I saw the picture Barry posted on Reefland.com. What amazing and encouraging site. Ponephei's and Marshall's mixed together, which looked like they were thriving.

Ron, Keep us updated as this is great news for all of us clam enthusiasts.
