After looking at all of the pictures, you would think he has problems with flow? Those huge colonies would have to block out most of the current flowing in those areas. Anybody have any thoughts about how to get around this problem?

italianreef why do u think a barebottom is a must? the last time i was in the ocean snorkeling and seeing huge coral i think it was a very DSB.

As you said, it was in the ocean....
Not only that, besides few corals majority of the corals grow from the rocks not from the sand. They could care less for the sand:D

I didn't say that. Maurizio, the owner of the tank, thinks it's an absolute must.

I had DSB for many years and now if I have to start a 100% SPS tank with undetectable nutrient levels and pristine water conditions I would go BB or very shallow bed, if instead I have to set up a lagoon tank with anemones, a variety of softies, more biodiversity and higher nutrient levels I would go DSB.
That is similar to what you can find in nature, where you find fine sand and silt there is a higher nutrient level, where you find coarse gravel or rock there are more scleractinian corals and cleaner water.

Yes, please, do not read descriptions in the bottom of the screen post, blureefs has removed his DSB and DSB refugium a time ago, I was started without any sand at the beginig, actualy from the first sifoning of my first tank, the results of this operation was reason form me to take out all of the sand.
As far as I can se there is no any sand on coral reefs, I'm saying on coral reefs, I see no reason for any in reef aquariums.

boris mac and bluereefs i take it u both use the now so popular BB.
DMK,around 1940 or litlle more later,Chen started with dsb in modern reef keping, during reefkeping evolution many reef aquariums owners ditch that metod due to many asociated problems and drawbacks with too much sand on the bottom.Around 1980 so cal Berlin group started with what we call "berlin system"(in reality they did not inovate nothing new besides use of hqi light for reef aquarium) with barre bottom or shallow CC bed. They also have problems with their aquariums.Recent inovations in reefkeping filtrations and mainteance are solutions (or posible solutions) for many problems asociated with BB or shalow bed aquarium.
For some weird reason some USA reefer in late 1990 start with dsb as new advanced method in reefkeping, few years later(this present days) they ditch dsb due to many problem related with too many sand on the aquarium bottom and start to promote BB as new fade in reefkeping filtrations....

I never had dsb in main aqarium, sadly 4 years before when I find Reef central all that story about dsb "push" me to make one refugium with him.
Never again.

I agree with blureefs, IMO everyone can convience them self with simple experiment: siphon out a portino of DSB, look at result, and nutritience poor enviormente is desireble than there is no room for DSB .
However I do like apearance of nice white aragonite in the tank but not more than 3/4"

did I miss the system and equiptment page?
did I miss the other details on additives?

Do the Italia just have photos and no details?

If I missed this please refer me where this is.

Thay just had pics no details i hope that thay will read this and give details on the reef tank and additives as many on Reef central would ready like to know more about Italy best reef tank.

That is a great tank no doubt. But as the others have been mentioning were are system spec?

Perhaps Maurizio is offended by all of our questions? I guess he has bigger fish to fry, but hey, it was fun while it lasted...all us poor bewildered Americanes! At least cool guys over there are leaking whatever info they can find out to us! Thanks, fellas! :smokin:
