Polyester vs. Filter socks

I prefer Poly-Fil as no cleaning I just throw it out and it's cheap. However, I don't run it all the time.

I would think filter docks are more efficient as almost 100% of the water passes through them. I use poly though. It does it's job.

I use filter socks, but I do change them at least twice a week. I have 10 or so so I just put them in a big zip lock until I am on my last then clean them.

What are the best ways to clean them? I'm new the the filter sock idea as I've been using a carbon reactor and filter floss. Any pointera on how to maintain them would be nice.

I use 200 micrin socks. They will clogg after 3-5 days which proves they do trap things and work as intended.

I put some floss between skimmer return sections of sump. But floss does nt seem to clog nearly as much as socks.

After using filter socks for 2+ years, now I'm a believer in making your own cheap socks. No cleaning, toss away when it starts to clog. It's been a big help in bringing my aquarium back from algae hell.

I clean them by flipping them inside out and running water through them while squeezing. Every once in a while I clean them in the sink and then toss them in the washer. They come out brand new.

I change my socks every 2 to 3 days, usually when I hear the water overflowing from the sock.

For cleaning I have a bunch of them, so I simply change sock, take dirty to sink, flip inside out, and rinse. Then I have a bucket with a tight fitting lid full of bleach water. Throw dirty sock in there and when full I throw them in the washing machine, no soap just the bleach water they were sitting in. Quick cycle to wash, then a second cycle with some Prime in the water. Couple days to hang and air dry and their good as new again.

Sweet! Thanks for responding. I was mostly concerned about using soap and getting it all out before putting them in the tank.
