Polyethelene.

Is Polyethelene a salt-water safe substance?

I'm thinking of using a commercial style poly tank with an angled bottom as part of my benthic zone so that I can drain off the detritus and such. The product lists itself as 'fresh water safe' though.

Anyone have info on this?

People used to use starboard for their bare bottom tanks, and I think that is polyethelene, but I am not sure. I sure hope it is fine, I used it to make a baffle in my new aio tank. Though I am told it deforms quite a bit in water, and since it is such an oily plastic, doesn't bond well with silicone. My aio tank hasn't been up long enough for me to judge based on that.

I've got multiple polyethylene tanks and water storage tanks used for culturing marine fish in the lab ;)

Thanks guys. I was pretty sure it was safe, and I won't have any trouble with bonding things to it since I am just plumbing it as a benthic sump.

are there any products that tanks are made of TO avoid? if so what are they?

Avoid polycarbonates and polyesters for storing limewater, as the high pH degrades them.
