Polyps Galore, 70+ Colony Zoa tank

Nice..............

I rally want to know some details on what you feed the Zoas.

Not only what, but when is the real question.

The zoas are fed a special blend of food (Well actually the whole tank is fed this stuff)

1 Whole Jar of this stuff

Also added into the mix was:
2 lbs Muscles
2 lbs Manilla Clams
15 Giant Shrimp
7 Large Oysters
4 Minced Carrots
1 Half Head Broccoli
1 Bottle Selcon
1 Bottle SeaChem Amino acid supplement
2 Bottles of Coral food soak
1 Half Bottle Reefroids
1 Half Bottle freeze dried phyto

Now here is the special part, I have no reaction at all with this food for a feeding response during the day. At night time it's a whole different story, unless you have moon lights they will stay shut so those are also important.

At around 1-2am I turn the return pump off, dial back the close loop and broadcast feed the whole tank. Let it sit until I wake up @ around 8:00am and then turn everything back on. I get a slight temp drop but nothing to large and then keep only the actinics on for the rest of the day.

wow beautiful how long ahve you had your tank and how many gallons is it i cant wait im saving up about to set up a 150 gallon tank wit zoas and a lionfish boosted

The zoa tank is 65g it has only been running for about 2 months but I have owned most of the zoas before that point.

Holy Moses! Absolutely stunning!!!
Thank you! Your kind words are like daggers to my Visa card, only makes me go out and buy more haha.

whats the name of stuff you feed them that jar and how long have you had your zoas and by the way beautiful tank very nice i should have plent of space for my zoas 48x24x30 wit just a lionfish and a harlequin tusk or maybe 2 volitan lionfish

Hmm, protein saturation in the water column at night. Interesting.

I've run into a couple people who cut their waterflow at night in softie / LPS tanks and get better growth. Obviously there's something to it.

Its just a high quality multigreen supplement from the drug store.

It doesn't happen every night but at least 2-3 times per week. In the wild planktonic levels and protein saturation levels would be highest when there is the least light and flow.
While thunderstorms can occur at any time, they most frequently occur mid to late afternoon when temperatures are high and instability is greatest. The frequency of thunderstorms falls after sunset to reach a low around dawn when temperatures are lowest. They do not occur mostly at night.-Some Meteorologist :hmm2:

I'm no expert but so far it has been working very well, I purchased that DarthMaul colony with 3 polyps and in 4 months I'm at about 43 polyps.

Wow. incredible! I was thinking about doing something similar to your cheato channel. How shallow is it? and you have frags in there as well?

Thanks for sharing the information regarding how you take care of things. Great pictures of all the z and p's. The colors are really stunning!

Fantastic set-up and beautiful zoas!

Thank you! I got a screamer of a deal for the whole zoa system that I just couldn't pass up, the zoas were in my main tank before but after a random zoa recession, 3 mini tank crashes and random snacks by my tangs I knew it was time for a new home.

Very nice,,,,,can you explain your feeding regime again. For the zoo tank.

How to feed Zoas:
Feed @ Night time between 1-2am after sufficient dark time.

Make sure your Moon lights are on

Feed a food that has been highly soaked in Amino Acid supplements, I personally have had luck with a vegetable based health supplement that's finely ground. Others advocate meaty foods such as oyster eggs but I don't have access to that in Calgary. Very Finley ground meaty food should also be mixed in, stuff like Shrimp, Oyster, Clam and squid all work well. Particle size should be a little smaller than a grain of sand.

If the tank has a sump isolate it from the sump for 3-4 hours, I personally keep going a little longer during the summer the tank stays warm.

Turn in tank flow to about 50% and broad cast feed your tank.
I would love for someone else to try it and see if they could get the same feeding results that I get?

that is sooo insane. whats your lighting set up over the zoa garden?

Tek 5 8 39W Fixture with 2 20 Watt Royal Blue LED strips for moon lights.
The bulbs are 3 New Gen and 5 assorted Actinic plus (Giesemann, ATI and Korallen-Zucht Super Blue).

In all its only 5 inches of water X 6.5 inches of depth and 5' of length. Works perfect for frags the bulb sits directly over giving some pretty intense light.

Whats growing up in the top left corner?
:worried: Nothing...
how long have you had your zoas for and once again beautiful set up love it
Thank You! I have had tanks running for about 3 years now, I have slowly acquired the collection but have traded and fragged lots of different zoas during that time. Some are purchased as colonies and some are frags.

Greatly appreciated!

Okay here are some photos of the feeding process, I picked up a bar of Cyclop-eeze to mix it up a little.

The food being thawed, added 5ml of selcon to the mix.

Before adding:

Results:

If you look closely you can see slime all over the polyps, over the span of a couple hours the slime (Now loaded with AA, Proteins and larger particals is brought into the oral cavity to be digested). My moon lights go off at around 4:00 so the coral has a few hours of darkness to digest.

Amazing tank...love the filtration set up...i bet that "nothing" really makes those zoos POP even more :)
