Pomacanthus annularis (Blue Ringed Angel) experience/advice ?

I've been contemplating the purchase of a juvenile (~1") for a few weeks now and wondering how these have worked out for others in terms of aggression / behavior / reef "safeness".

Also, curious on growth rates in captivity.

It would be going in a ~450 gal (10' x 30" x 30") DT (about 700 gal system) but will reside in a 115 gal QT for the current time while the DT is completed.

Definite tank mates (currently have):

Mature majestic angel x 1
Red Sea regal angel x 1
Pyramid butterfly x 2
Milliaris butterfly x 1
Yellow tang x 1

Possible future tank mates (need more research/advice):

Scribbled angel (some day)
Goldflake or Flagfin (as juvenile)
Punctato butterfly (1 or 2)
Possibly 1 additional large angel (Blue Stripe, Blue Face or Passer although I understand these can be a little too aggressive?)

Tank is a "pseudo" reef SPS dominate, with assorted zoos, LPS, softies that are frags from my existing tanks so they are sacrificial if someone gets nippy.

Any words of caution with the annularis or my stocking plans in general?

Thanks,

Francis

only thing I can say is get the Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis instead :)

one of my all times fav fish.

sorry no experience with the blue rings. but would love to see pics of the new tank when completed :)

the angels are great fish though some may pick on your lps and zoas...
Passers can be very, very aggressive...
I would try and get one of the baby Annularis that Wen breeds...dd has them...

Thanks for the heads up on the Passer. Unfortunately as a Canuck I can't order through DD. The one I'm looking at was imported from Quality Marine about a month ago. Tiny but still alive at the LFS which is encouraging. I'll spend some more time observing it though before I pull the trigger (I have seen some of the other fish in the store scratching so there may be a fluke issue)

Ah yes, how could I forget the Blueline!, another gorgeous angel. Passer off the list, Blueline on :-)

I'll be sure to post some pics once its up and running. Right now it's just a stand and sheets of glass tying up my living room ;-) a build this size is tough on a tight budget but want water in within 4 months.

send me a pm..I know somebody with lots of Passers, various sizes...I would recommend a small one...not sure he ships to Canada...

Michael ay nya has a tiny blueline....1.5 or so...just beginning to change coloration...

Annularis angels are stunning. I'd have one before a blueline in a heartbeat. In your size tank, I would go for it.

Ive got an annularis in a mixed reef. It is a CB fish from LA/DD. This is my second one - my first succumbed after about 6 months; just died one day after its "breakfast/lunch". The fish was super fat and healthy and just starting its transition to adult colors when it died. The new baby has been in my system for about 1.5 months. Gives and takes no "carp" from anyone even at its tiny size. Both of mine have shown no interest in corals. My first one liked to eat the skirts off of palys, the new one could care less about any corals.

Really nice fish that is second only to my flame in attention from non fishy visitors

nice!
The cb annularis from Wen are killer...I put one in my parent's tank...

I would go for it too. My Annularis was 13 inches. Hardy fish, I would say the top 3 hardiest of the large Angels..

Hmmm, sounds like the general consensus is a go on the annularis. :-) I will check out the fish again tomorrow and observe its condition once more.

beachbreak: happy to hear yours takes no "carp" even as a baby, this was one of my concerns. I love getting fish when they are tiny, it's very rewarding to watch them grow up and develop their personalities.

Here's photos of the little guy in acclimation and in the wild eating some paly skirts. Let us know if you get one and post up some pix!

Beautiful fish Coral_Lagoon! That goes for the queen too

Well I checked out the fish again today, it looks a little ragged around the fins but was eating frozen brine well. I hummed and hawed then noticed the price tag labeled "AC Blue Ring Angel $79.99". Double checked and sure enough, "AC" stood for "aqua cultured". This one was imported by Quality Marine from Bali Aquaculture and subsequently shipped to my LFS. Decision made :)

Sorry for the lousy pic:

About 1" long, after a 1 1/2 hour aclimation it went into my med/observation tank along with my pair of pyramid butterflys. Their QT clock gets reset, but wasnt going to put any fish into my 115 gal QT tank until Sept.1 anyway as I have 360 lbs of live rock that I want fallow for 10 weeks.

Should I be concerned with the ragged fins at this point or wait and see if any rot/fungus develops? I usually keep fish in the med tank a minimum 8 weeks before they go in either the DT or my larger QT. They get a week of Prazi as a prophylactic treatment after week 2 and no other meds unless something appears. Is this an OK procedure?

Thanks again to all for the encouragement and advice.

Francis

Feed other foods besides brine. Chopped shrimp, scallops, mysis, pellets will fatten him up and he should grow quickly if fed 3-5 times a day. Keep an eye on the fins, maybe he was being harassed by other fish?
IME these guys are very hardy fish.
