Poor Polyp Extension

I'm wondering if VSV dosing can cause poor popular extension? A few of my sps have some extension, but very poor, while others are showing almost none.

It may also be flow, but I tend to doubt it seeing as how I have two K4s, a K3, and a new evo 1050 blowing around in my 75g.

How good is your skimmer? Do you feed a lot? Do you have any angel fish or pesky nibblers? How about phosphates do your viewing panels get algae often? I have good PE now, unfortunately I have a lot of variables. 1) rescaped took out 68lbs of rock, also have no rock laying on sand all on acrylic stilts for flow reasons 2) different skimmer not better 3) way less feeding 35% less at least 4) added 2 koralias one on each side 5) no more dosing random crap like vitamin c or lots of aminos, stil do once a week 6) I dose my 3 part very carefully tested for 2 weeks staright before and after. Less hands in the tank, no more moving crap around except today, I have 5 new frags dont wanna talk about it luckily nothing prized but 2 were nice one was a 3 inch slimer now 1 1/2 inch stick with crumbs on the end

make sure you parameters are all in check. if there not, then you know why you dont have good polyp extension. but if you do, you should try coral vite. i swear by this stuff. polyp extension doubled in my tank. just make sure you have all your parameters in check first before you start added other stuff in the water.

No nibblers, got rid of them months ago. I have an ASM G-1x (120g rated) skimmer, undetectable phosphates (Salifert), clean the glass once every 3-4 days (it's not bad though), and I use BRS 2-part dosing on pumps

I'm very cautious against adding another chemical to the tank. I feel that adding a chemical to "fix" a current problem is just a band-aid...but thank you!

I do weekly water changes (10%) and my params have been stable for months now...

Temp: 76
sg: 1.025
pH: 8.3
Ca: 420
dKh: 9
Mg: 1250
NO3: 0
PO4: 0

I was dosing VSV at a maintenance dose of about 1.1ml daily, but noticed a slight cyano problem and poor polyp extension. I then learned that sugar can cause some problems including cyano and/or damage to corals...

A week ago I switched to just vinegar as a carbon source and the equivalent amount vs. VSV is about 6ml, so I have since been dosing that much.

All of my LPS are happy and some of my more hardy SPS show some polyp extension (i.e. green slimer, millie etc) but most of my SPS are showing nothing...

do you feed your sps? seems like your going with an ULNS? correct. maybe your not giving your sps enough nutrients/food for them to grow. try giving the oyster eggs every other night.

Shouldn't your mag be 1300-1500? I was at 1200 the other day and saw an immediate increase in PE after I brought my mag up to 1375.

I usually keep it at 1250, but it dropped a bit

Oh you have no IDEA how happy I am to read this. I just tested my Mg last night for the first time and it is 1170.

Going to fix this tonight and hope my PE will come back.

Could this really be the culprit? A drop in 50-100 with Mg could cause my SPS to show poor extension? I hope that's it....adding Mg very slowly as we speak.

Too many variables to determine why you don't have any polyp extension but VSV dosing can cause the acros to starve.
