Possible New Cure for Ick?

And plus, pointing out that quartining the fish is not actually even close to what the point of this thread was about.

And yes I agree quartine is a great idea, but sometimes it's not possible. These kinds of threads, if they work, are what those hobbyist need.
 
I caught my Royal Gramma buy guessing which piece of LR to pull out.. I put that in a QT tank and after a few minutes, he popped out of it. It wasn't happy when I pulled the LR out again though. All I know is I NEVER want to 'tear' the tank down again hunting fish with a net... I'll try next time with food or something.. I also saw some contrption on Dr Fosters with a door you turn when the fish go inside...

i will look for pics of the trap i made, but it was on a larger scale. i have a 500 gallon reef with plenty of rock ect and nets are not an option. what i used was a hamper for closthes that was made out of plastic and had a top hinge that was also plastic. it also has lots of holes in it, spider web like design, so the water flowed through it. i started first by keeping it in the tank for a copule of days, then i started puting nori on a rock, which i feed constantly, next to it..

then in it after a couple of days. i had my three purple tangs, all the yellows, valange blcak ect all going in it. at that point it was a matter of dropiing the hinge down which i rubber banded a rock to the top of it with fish line holding it up..

something similar to the box droping down on bugs bunny in the old cartoons.

you could try somethingon a smaller scale .. you might have to move a little rock. but with patients it can be done.

i also made another trap when my black tang out of nowhere started to get bullied. there are these black baskets that HD sells in the pond section they are about 8 inches by 8 inches by 5 deep.. they float. i cut a 4 by 4 inch hole in the side and it floated near the top. the tang would hide near the tiop when getting bullied..eventually he sought refuge there and a quick drop of the net to cover the hole and he was cought.

fish can be caought ...the problem is that the fish must be used to this type of trap in the tank and take food from inside it.

so even if your fish are not sick it is a good idea to feed with a trap in the tank for the future sickness. i will look for the pics if you would like to see them.

That's okay.. Maybe someone else may want pics but I get the idea (don't want you to go searching etc). Right now, I'm going through some 'traditional' ich curing. Leaving tank fallow/copper in QT for my lone survivor sailfin tang. I'll try some garlic and maybe ginger in food now and then to see if it at least adds some variety to their diet (ie: they actually eat it).
 
So is this treatment really working,
also how can i make fishfood?

i am feeding my fish brineshrimp now.

Is it the ginger or garlic that is working?

make sure your paramenter are good. i.e. ph and temp and that they are not fluctuating. that creates stress on the fish. i noticed that when my parameters were at optimal levels the ick was not as bad and the fish fought it off better.

Do you have any scientific proof that spinning around three times before you turn on your tank lights in the morning is a cure for ich? Too exterme and example? How about adding crushed red pepper to your fish food? Arnica? Adding magents to your return line?

This hobby is full of old wives tales, and we now have a chance to stop one in its tracks - before tons of people believe it and let their animals die.

There really isn't even any anecdotal evidence that ginger could possibly help with ich. Nada.
 
Lefty - Have you tried/do you know someone that has tried ginger as a treatment? If you can prove ginger does not work, then please do so to stop me wasting my time trying it :)

I am guessing you can proove it doesn't work, because you wouldn't have made that statement.... Am I right?!?!

Yes. It worked as well as changing bulbs.

I don't think it really is up to me to provide evidence that it doesn't work, more that those that think it works provide evidence that it does work. Find some good evidence that it does work before you waste your time trying it. :D

I don't think we are after proof, but evidence. I have no proof that it doesn't work, but I also have no proof that changing light bulbs doesn't cure ich either.
 
Considering there are tried and true as well as scientifically proven methods of curing ich (copper and hyposalinity), the use of any other method is risky. Methods such as ginger are very experimental at best, and far from proven. Since there are methods that are proven to work, I can not see any good reason to risk a fish's life on unproven methods unless one is doing proper research looking for other cures. After all, if your fish have ick do you want to cure them for sure or gamble with their lives ;)

BTW, please keep all comments to something informational. If you have some good information to share, please do. However, if you only have a comment that is devoid of information that will only serve to fuel flames...please walk away from the keyboard. Otherwise I will have to lock this thread.
 
Didnt come back to argue at all, just wanted to know if there was any proof it didnt work, so I could prevent wasting time by trying it. If the guy said it didnt work, I'd like to know if he has tried it for himself thats all.

-If he says ginger does not work, there must be some evidence behind it.
 
i've bought a clownfish recently, when i put it in my aquarium the next day it was infected with marine ick, ive tried the ginger thing, the following day the ick dissapeared from the fish, before i had the same kind of fish and died with the ick. i think the ginger in the fish food really works.

Many have the exact same experience without ginger - or any other treatment for that matter. Its the nature of the parasite to clear up on its own, which is why so many supposed 'cures' continually make the rounds.
 
i tried everything over the years. the best cure for me was great water quality and the fish with a variety of feeding fourght off the ick on their own. i tried ginger and it worked for me once. but i beileive this was just coincidence and the fish is the one that fought off the ick and would have done so regardless of the ginger. i say this because many of my fish have had ick and fought it off on their own.
