Possible New Cure for Ick?

ATJ ~ I agree with the three posters above me. It's nice to see someone with an open mind and not so mired in the "tried and true" methods, that they won't even give this "ginger" experiment another thought. It's very disconcerting reading so many, haughty, prideful, elitist attitude, hateful post. I'm glad that you are at least 'looking' into to it. Goes to show, what a good scientist does! :)
For the record, I do use hypo for all new arrivals. But would like to see if there's truely something to Cratylus claims. Wouldn't it be wonderful, if it was truely a break through!?! I won't quit using hypo until I see more research "Extensive Reasearch" done on the benefits of ginger, if, in fact there is any.

For everyone else (you know who you are), please, quit jumping down Cratylus throat about this, afterall he's sharing his findings/observations and hasn't once said it was a 'cure.'

I've been doing the following for 3 days, and had no success...

mixing the defrosted mix of brine shrimp and angle formula with powdered giner, as well as extremely thin pieces of ginger root...

No difference in my CB.

MARINE ICK

MARINE ICK

HI HAVING SUFFERED AT THE HAND OF MARINE ICK IN A REEF TANK TWICE I HAVE FOUND THE ONLY GARANTEED CURE IS TO DROP THE SALINITY TO 1014 OVER SEVEN DAYS LEAVE IT AT THIS FOR ANOTHER SEVEN TO TEN DAYS BY THEN FISH SHOUL SHOW NO SIGNS OF THE DREADED PARASITE THEN RAISE IT BACK AGAIN OVER SEVEN DAYS THE REASON BEHIND THIS IS MARINE ICK CANOT SURVIVE IN ANY THING UNDER 1016 ALTHOUGH CORALS ARE NOT FOND OF THIS LOW SALINITY I HAVE NEVER LOST A CORAL{SPS OR OTHERWISE} TO THIS TREATMENT MOST GOOD UK SHOPS NOW RECOMEND THIS TREATMENT AND NO LONGER STOCK NON COPPER TREATMETS FOR REEF TANKS

With respect, I think posts like this only serve to make the whole discussion more unecessarily charged. I have no idea if this was aimed at me or not, but either way the post does make me feel bad. FWIW, the only time I got on Cratylus' case was for his last post in this thread and that had nothing to do with ginger and ich.
I don't understand why dicsussions where people disagree so often turn into a such a mess, and I don't understand why so often a post expressing an opinion is interpretered as haughty prideful, elitist or hateful. I further don't understand why posts like the one quoted above only berate the bad behavior shown by one side, and not the other.
Anyway, thats my un reef related 2 cents, and maybe I am being overly sensitive - if so, I apologize. I hope in the new year we can all read each others posts with a charatible interpreation.

MY APOLIGIES IF MY SEEMED SCATHING OF SOMEONE ELSES IDEAS AND TRIALS THIS WAS NOT HOW IT WAS INTENDED THIS WAS A POST TO SHARE HOW TO RID A TANK OR THE DREADED ITCH WHICH HAS WORKED TWICE FOR ME I APPOLIGISE IF ANY OFFENCE WAS TAKEN AS I FEEL WE ARE ALL WORKING TO FIGHT THE SAME DEMONS
WHILST I APPLAUD THE TRIAL OF NEW IDEAS
I WAS ONLY OFFERING A ALTERNATIVE

ROBERLEA,
PLEASE STOP SCREAMING AT US. When you type your messages in all caps, it is the BB equivelant of screaming, and it's not appreciated. I promise, everyone will hear you just fine if you take off the caps lock.
Everyone else,
I see no need for the posts that drip with sarcasm, or the veiled shots being taken at each other.

18 pages of bickering now i remember why i don't use this forum very often. This thread only needed to be two or three pages, but then i suppose it gives all you bored housewives something to do. i'll pop back in 2006 you'll still probably be bickering like 2 yr olds.

Btw good for you Cratylus i'm happy it worked out for you.

Hi Evan, well thanks for sharing, that's the sort of thing we need to know, even if it is not quite what we wanted to hear. :sad2:
As implied by ATJ, the amount of active ingredients may vary from one ginger to another, I wonder if it may pay to PM Cratylis and see if you are using the same ginger, etc.
And most of all, keep us posted.
Good Luck!

I'm going to keep using it for a few days. The CB had had ick for quite a little while, I was away and my family didn't tell me how long it had been going on.

I'm using Jamacian root, as he said he was too. I'll keep everyone posted.

Also, in that experiment that ATJ quoted, the caprylic acid was very effective at 17 degrees, but not so effective at 24 degrees. So the lowest possible temperature would likely help.

I believe that is more a statement about C. irritans than it is about caprylic acid. A temperature of 17°C is right at the lower end of the range for C. irritans and so any antiparasitic effect of the caprylic acid will seem magnified.

Roberlea,

[welcome]

Please turn off your CAPSLOCK button, as it is considered shouting on the internet. We call that proper netiquette. :D

Thanks for chiming in with your thoughts.

Maybe some of you guys still got sore heads!

Doesn't really bug me to see large cap.

Oh by the way ATJ, do you know any research into the anti parasite properties of Garlic?

I am only aware of this discussion by Horge Cortes-Jorge Jr:

Garlic versus 'Marine Ich'

which questions whether the active ingredients of garlic could even make it to where they are required.

Hmmm.. yes, a good study, although I was hoping some more work may have been done since then.
However, I will say that garlic has certainly appeared to work when I've used it.

It would be nice if people had something to say if they're going to post.

I'm not aware of any work in this area, and I doubt there would be on garlic as such. It would be more likely for someone to investigate various components of garlic for there effectiveness.

I have a theory about garlic and it might apply to ginger, too. Regardless of any antiparasitic properties or components of either, the benefit of garlic (or ginger) may be somewhat of a placebo effect. In order to feed the fish the garlic (or ginger) soaked food, people have to feed the fish. If you believe it is going to work, you might end up feeding the fish more often and you would certainly watch more closely to make sure they eat. This is likely to result in them being fed better than they might otherwise be. More food may lead to more strength to either survive the infection and/or develop an immunity to the parasite.

Given that the general advice for a reef tank is to feed the fish sparingly to reduce nutrient import, the extra feeding that may result from garlic and/or ginger may be sufficient to improve the chances of the fish surviving and acquiring immunity. Additionally, the garlic (or ginger) may provide minerals, elements or other nutritional components that are lacking in the diet.

Note that I'm not saying that garlic and ginger don't have antiparasitic properties but am speculating on other possible reasons for apparent success.

What an interesting theory. I never have to deal with ich, honestly. In all these years, only one fish had Ich and died immediately before I could even pull it out to try and treat it. (Yellow Tang, dead in two days covered with ich.)

I do feed a lot to my tanks as any can attest. My fish are fat and happy, and I try to keep the reef as unpolluted as I can even with these circumstances. I watch the fish to make sure they eat, and vary their diets with many selections.

I agree! I remember starting, and some fish had ich, being so excited to be able to buy any product that said it could help because I felt so helpless. I tried garlic several times too with the same success as without garlic.

Yes, you are being overly sensitive. I never said any names or quoted anyone. I don't know why you thought I was singling you out. In fact, your name didn't even register with me, really. Basically, I was making a plea to everyone to not jump down Cratylus throat for sharing his experience. I did NOT take sides. Notice you left out in your quote of me that "I won't quit using hypo until I see more research "Extensive Reasearch" done on the benefits of ginger, if, in fact there is any."
No sides taken here, just wanting to learn and be open minded to new things. Now, back to the subject of "Ginger" "Hypo and Garlic" please!
