possible RO problem or not

Guys here is one i cant figure out. For a while i could not figure out why i was having a high phosphate problem. All other levels were good, using RO water from a coral life 24gph unit three stage. One day i decided to test my RO water right out of the unit. As excepted everything was fine except for a slightly high phosphate content. I changed all the filters and media for the RO unit. But yet i still have slight phosphate content right out of the gate. The question is, is it my water, RO unit or anything else you can think of? If you say my RO is the problem could anyone suggest something for about $200 or less that would work better.

I have a Kent RO/DI Maxxima which I believe you can get at Marine Depot for about $190...great unit. The DI in addition to the RO may help with the phosphates.

I have tried two different test kits. Tested distilled water, ro water and tank water. Of course distilled water got 0, slightly more from ro water, and high from tank water

RO units are effected by two things temperature and pressure. The colder the water that is ran through it, the purer that water will be. There will be less water produced though.

Do you know what your pressure is? If it is to low or extremely high that can contribute.

i have been using cold water but have no idea what the pressure is. I have been checking out ro units on the web today, found a couple and wondered what you think. the typhon III and the h20 purely or the kent hi s, which would be better. all have gauges for pressure and temperature.

I use the Kent Hi-S 35gpd and think its great, never had experience with others. Temperature doesn't matter as long as it's not hot water, flow should be around 65psi, but lower won't affect water quality, just the amount (gpd). HTH

What is your tap phosphate reading before the RO. RO will only take out about 90% of the contaminants, 95% at best. If your phosphate is high enough that the 5-10% carry over is affecting your tank, you may want to consider an add-on DI unit. That will clean it up the rest of the way.
