Possibly relocating to Tampa

My company might relocate me to Tampa, it seems there is plenty of action in the hobby down there (at least compared to Harrisburg, PA).
I have general off topic questions.
Overall do you guys like living in the area?
What are the pros & cons of Tampa?
If I move what area(s) should I avoid to live in?

Thanks

I live in Dunedin and work in Tampa.... I love living in Pinellas County (Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Safety Harbor are all nice areas) even with a 45-60 minute commute. With anywhere you look, I think there are good areas and bad areas... there are some nice places in Tampa and not so nice places. Being originally from Philly I still miss the change in seasons... it's very hot here, and humid. Overall, great place and lots of local helpful reefers in the community!

My girlfriend and I just bought a house in Largo/Seminole area. I have lived here all my life, born and raised here in Pinellas county. I have lived in St. Petersburg, Madiera Beach, Seminole, South Pasadena, and finally Largo. For bad areas the only areas i know of is south St. Petersburg, and South Clearwater area. Thats all that I can think of. Lots of helpful reefers here. As well as lots of aquarium shops. I have never lived in Tampa. Never really wanted to. Dunedin is a nice area as well. It does get hot down here, but I haven't known any different weather lol. I would never want to live anywhere else.

I'm from Ohio originally & can say I don't miss it. But yea every area here has good & bad spots but depends on what your used too. Your house pricing will reflect the area. North Tampa is becoming very popular near, Lutz, land o lakes, Wesley Chapel. They have more communities & schools within the community. I'm not a community person. I can't do cookie cutter houses with HOA. I live in a smaller historical town south of Lakeland. The one big thing I hate about Tampa is 275 hwy. I can't do bumper traffic anymore.

I relocated from Pittsburgh three years ago.

I live in the Largo / Clearwater / Bellair Bluffs section of Pinellas County (about a mile from the intercostal).

To be honest - comparing this to Pa - It's really quite nice. Sure - there's a whole lot more "crazy" in Florida (ranging from drivers to crime to just some of the most bizarre stuff you will ever see). There are a few things that really sold me on moving down here: The weather is just phenomenal. tshirts and shorts outside on christmas day. The people I met were all very nice to me - southern hospitality is not dead.

I would use Trulia to gage the areas where you want to avoid (find a house for sale in a neighborhood you are interested in and check their crime map).

Next - cross reference your location with google maps. You dont want to be anywhere within a mile of any trailer park or mobile home community.

Hope that helps you out.

+1 on the Ohio thing. It really comes down to the type of place you want to live, but in general I think it's pretty safe, and the weather difference is pretty phenomenal. If you have a family with school age children I think it changes where you are willing to live as well.

Great, thanks for all the great input. The office is located on 4350 W Cypress, Tampa, right off of 275 so it sounds like I might have the joy of traffic again. I used to live north of the San Francisco Area and it took me about 45-60 min to go to work (about 4 miles away) in rush hour.

I will look into the areas mentioned. Thanks for the tips.

Also, for those who own a house what's your Home Owners Insurance premium? I heard they are high down there

Depending on home location and time of day it may be easier to take a side street than to get on 275..... That address is right near the airport and is frequently a headache at rush hours

I love living in the Bay area (Largo)
I think the pros are, it's Florida, alot of cool stuff around here to see and do. Cons, it's Florida and some parts are pretty populated. There are definitely a lot of great stores in the general area.

Welcome, neighbor. I work right down the road on Cypress. Traffic in the area is horrible but they are working on some improvements. Also there is a nice (relatively unknown) park with a small beach and nice jogging path at the end of Cypress.

I have lived in Tampa (and currently Wesley Chapel) my entire life. So feel free to PM me with any questions you might have.

+1 with what Postal said. I work in the same area. S.Tampa Traffic is awful. Nice houses but it gets annoying sometimes. Between the airport, 3 bridges that run from St. Pete/Clearwater into Tampa and a mall it's a mess.
I take the 45 minute drive from Dunedin everyday and can't complain.

Thanks postal, I will definitely PM you if I have questions.

I have been researching and I like the idea of living in Pinnelas county so far.

I also understand there is a big air force base there, is there a lot of flight training going on? I love Virginia Beach but the few times I have been on Vacation those jets are constantly flying and it was something that bother my wife.

Noise from MacDill AFB would only potentially be an issue if you lived very close to it at the southern tip of Tampa. You are more likely to be bothered by jets from Tampa International Airport depending on your location.
The good thing about the Tampa Bay area is that it offers a multitude of different types of living with a reasonable driving distance. You can select anything from metro downtown condos to rural homes with acres of land. And of course every size and type subdivision in between the extremes are available.

The planes on Macdill don't take off as often as they do at TPA.

So noise won't be an issue if you live in South Tampa. :)
