Possibly relocating to Tampa

When I lived & worked in largo I would occasionally get to see fighter jets fly over. But at work I would see mostly the coast guard prop planes fly by. And then you have the St Pete/ Clearwater airport too. Yes there are quite a few airports. Would love to take a helicopter tour of the Bay Area. I bet it's awesome. Pinellas has a large amount of reefers in the area within this forum. I don't know how many times I bought something & the person was within 10 minutes of me. I miss living in pinellas county. Always plenty of things going on & lots to do. Man I love Fla:)

The good thing about the Tampa Bay area is that it offers a multitude of different types of living with a reasonable driving distance. You can select anything from metro downtown condos to rural homes with acres of land. And of course every size and type subdivision in between the extremes are available.
It sound like this is another plus for the area.

Awesome that sounds like any bigger city...I don't know if any of you have been to Virginia Beach but they have fighting jets flying very low almost 24/7...it doesn't bother me though, but my wife gets annoyed.

I see a lot of lakes in the area, are alligators a problem? Meaning they pop up every where to the point it becomes nuisance and dangerous

I had one in my back yard the other day. You have to be smart around fresh water and assume they are in there even if you can't see them. They very rarely attack people.

I was stationed at NAS Oceana in the late 80's...So I help with all that jet noise..lol.

Alligators yeah I used to worry about them too, but really they are not a big problem down here. However we do have some laws regarding certain activities involving them. I personally have never had a desire to feed or molest one myself, but apparently someone has lol.

Only once, my uncle however golfs and I do recall him saying he does infact see them quite often.

I see them almost every time I play. I see them around where I live pretty frequently as well, but I also look for them every time I'm near a body of water.

Yes - quite a few gators. I work in the feather sound area and the lake behind work has 4-6 of them. See them all the time while golfing.

See them all the time boating in Lake Tarpon - where they caught that 11 foot american crocodile. We were putting the boat into the dock one time and I was pushing agaist some pylons and happened to look down to see this 4' gator eyeing me and licking his chops. I was lucky to not have been bitten on that one.

The whopper was a 10 footer at USF's "The claw" golf course. It was on the back nine on a par 3 that has a little bit of water in play. Wouldn't you know - this is the hole where I scald the ball and it lands 4 foot from this monster. We eventually scared it back into the water so I could retreive my ball - but there was no way I was playing it as it lay. Still put me off my game and scalded the next 4 shots.

like anbosu said - I've never heard of an attack on people. FWC is pretty good at keeping them under control. Once they reach 4 foot or so - they move them out of the populated areas (if they know about it at least).

I moved down last year from Michigan (boy, glad I missed that winter this year). We ended up in Largo but we have no schools to worry about and I work about 10 minutes away. Our house is on the Seminole Canal and we see a 10 footer "cruising" about twice a week or so. Only came up on our bank once that we have observed, but when I went out to take a pic (I was back quite a ways!) it took off for the water again. FWC has been watching for this one as folks say they like to get rid of them when they start getting large.
Tampa is a big City compared to where I came from (Grand Rapids MI) and once you get used to the traffic and the "diversity of drivers", you will love it. Plenty to do and the Gulf isn't too far away either :). I for one am glad I took the job transfer down here!

I moved to Tampa in 1991. I have traveled pretty much everywhere in the US with my job and for me this area is great. The fishing both fresh and saltwater and the beaches will keep me here.

Getting closer to become a reality, so far Pinellas county has gotten my attention (Largo, Seminole, and Clearwater areas). I guess my dog will be on a leash all the time, he is crazy about swimming (uncommon for a rat terrier)

There are dog beaches at Ft. Desoto and Davis Island where you can let your dog run around and swim in relative safety. There are probably a few others also, but those are the two that I know of - since it's salt water it's a little safer.

Get a house with a pool lol. I have our child fence up to keep our labs and shepherd out of the pool! There's a couple of really nice and big dog parks near the palm harbor, clearwater, Oldsmar area. Beach wise, we just find an abandoned spot and let them at it, haha.

Ok, now this is happening for sure.

How is the commute from Largo/Clearwell to Tampa? I see that you either take 60 or 275 to cross the bay.

I see gators almost every day when I'm at work. My job is located about an hour southeast of Tampa though. Gators do not appear to be typically in populated residential areas. I guess if they do wander into these areas they are removed fairly quickly. Personally, I would still not walk your dog next to water (freshwater ponds, canals, causeways, etc.) because I would probably go in after the gator if it took one of my dogs.

The gators at my work aren't typically aggressive (no, I do not work at a zoo). They appear to be more afraid of you than you are of them. Unless it is mating season or a female has her eggs laid in close proximity. Then you are in trouble :)
