This could be a sump and with temporary configurations when needed it could also be a quarantine/hospital tank/refugium/live food keeper. Who knows... the possibilities are endless.
Have the drain come down into the main area, then overflow into chamber 1/2/3 then three returns up to your tank and not the main chamber.
You'd have to lose the hood that way. Might be a good way to do a slow flow fuge. I wouldn't try and pump much through it turnover wise without modding the strainer/overflow design.
