What type of lights are you running?

Right now, I only have 70Watt of PC. Dual daylight and dual actinic.

By next weekend, I should have my canopy built and I'm going with 24'' T5's. I know I know, much debate over T5's but I might also have a 150watt MH. Just not sure about the MH yet. Don't want anything burned and bleached. Any input for best lighting for zoanthids???? Thanks!

Sorry Ryan I tottaly passed over your post. I guess I'm image oriented. But I would agree with Kigs in that a closer up PIC may help in the ID process.

Hi all, my first venture in the Zoa forum. A quick question. I just bought this rock with a mix of zoa's. Never seen the big ones before. Just wondering if someone could ID (the LFS called them BPE or something like that), and more importantly, tell me how much light they like. I have 250W DE 14K phoenix in PFO on Icecap eballasts. 30" tall tank. Should i put them bottom, middle, top (after the bath with Lugol's, of course). Sorry for the crappy pic.

Hey Peter,

I was going to reply to your other thread, but ran a blank with the 30" high tank. Start them low and move them up with time. In a 30" tank you could probably place them about 5-6 inches off the sand to start. Give them two weeks and if you start to notice them extending for light then you should move them up. Regardless if they stretch or not you could still move them up. So here is a In My Tank perspective.

I have the same kind in my tank and I keep them about 4-5 inches below the surface in a med-high flow area. I have the same lights as you so you should be fine in terms of color.

So to recap:
Start them 5-6inches off the sand for a tank as tall as yours, then move them up once you notice that they open everyday (took me 3 weeks to have them open everyday).

Here's a better one. This point and shoot cam was fine for my small tank, guess the bigger tank with thick glass is causing it problems. Anyway, another quick question. Do zoa's fight with each other? I mean, should I be concerned that there are 4 different colors all packed together?

First off nice looking colony.

Now to answer your question. Zoas/Palys won't fight each other but they can out compete each other. What this means is that those larger Red zoas will shadow and potentially lead to a neighboring colonies starvation.

My suggestion would be to frag off those larger Red zoas from that rock and only keep zoas that are about the same size on there. Personally I really like the look of different colors touching each other, but I would only do this with similar polyp sizes.

Check out this TOTM winner if you want to see a prime example of how great a rock can look when zoas touch each other.

You might want to consider breaking out the chisel before they intermingle.
Nothing worse then two colony's intertwining their mats. One will always lose in the end.
Take Fickles advise and do it asap.

This is not my photo, but a frag I traded to a much better photographer then me. I got permission to use the photo.

under 14k halides

I got these as a wild colony (200+ polyps). I have been growing and fragging them for two years. I currently have 2 large (200+ polyps colonies). They grow really well and the color just seems to get better and better. I currently have them under 12k reefflux halides on the bottom of the tank. I had them near the top, but the stopped opening all the way. Since moving them down the coloring is better and the polyps have increased in size. I have them side by side with my small ppe frag. They are similar in size and color. The mouth is white and skirt just has a hint of green. The big difference is the raspberry stripping over the purple. I know I am not the only one that has these. I have traded off at least a dozen frags myself I am not sure if these have a name. Any ideas?

I wish I could trade with you, but alas, you are in the States and I am in Canada :\
In fact, I think soft corals are allowed without live rock, but I'm getting off topic here.

SWEET PURPLE ZOOS

I picked up a nice rock of zoas today. They are lavender when closed up, but upon opening they are a lavender to dark purple fade from fringe to the center with the center having a Neon green star shapes and a dark purple mouth.

I have yet to find a name for these, I did find some kinda like them, but not close enough to call them.
