posting pictures

I'm new to the picture posting game and I'm having trouble uploading them. The pictures I have are between 2 and 3MB and when I try to upload them I get the over 50K warning. How can I fix my problem? Is there another site I can upload too and then link to posts? Would decreasing the detail in the pictures be the answer?
