Potters and Flame angel in temps of ?

I have read conflicting information on the Potters Angel regarding water temperatures. Many of the major online sites you buy them from state 72-78 degrees (like most any other reef fish), but like many reef tanks one of mine runs just a wee bit higher during the summer months. Currently my tank will range from 78-81.5 degrees in the summer months. I don't like the idea of adding a chiller due to the added expense. Lighting is LED and my tank has an open grid top; therefore those are not related factors.

Questions-

1. Is the Potters angel really a deep water angel requiring lowering temps that increases life expectancy? Are these known facts?

2. Will a tank that gets up to 81-82 degrees limit success of keeping a Potters?

3. Anyone able to share stories about their Potters angel, including temperament, water parameters, feeding requirements, etc.

4. How does the Potters requirements differ from that of the Flame Angel when considering the above questions? I plan to have both either together or in separate tanks that are large enough :spin2:. I had to state that because I knew someone would ask.

I want to be successful in keeping my Potters that is due to arrive tomorrow, thus I seek all the help I can get. Thank you in advance!

I have a flame angel in my reef and the temps. run from 79 - 80.5. It is a very robust and healthy fish. I have never kept a potter's angel.

Potters 5 years strong at 78*F. Just added a 1.5" flame last month and it's doing fine now. Also, as a matter of history, I did keep a pair of flames at the same temp, but gave them away as the male was psychotic about his territory and mate. Good luck.

Its still early but I've kept a Potters Angel for over 3 years and he seems to be thriving. I don't run a chiller but have been able to keep the tank between 76 and 78 degrees with a small fan that blows over the sump during the summer months.

I've never attempted a Flame Angel.

Thank you all for the replies.

I see a couple 78 degree tanks for the Potters Angel, but is anyone keeping it at a higher temperature? Any other feedback on the temperature of the Potters and habits would be welcomed =). It is really a beautiful fish and I want to provide the best care possible by hearing real life experiences. I have read other books and online sites, and by and large it see the standard 72-78 range, which is really what any (for the most part) fish you buy notes.

Thanks again!

Yes, people are doing all sorts of things.
to the best of my knowledge potter has best chance of survival at 75 or below....
I agree, I would not keep a Potter's at 81. This is a fish that's perfectly happy at temps around 72. Michael gives the range to be 68 to 79, but last time I checked, people were finding the 79 is high.

If a fish kept consistently in too hot temps, there will be no diagnosis of "too darn hot disease". It's immune system will be weak and it will fall to a bacteria or some other ailment.
