Potter's Angels

uhhhh, no they arent. haha sorry i'm biased, i have a potters

the truth is that you really can't compare different species; they all have their allure.

Sometimes the difficult species make them more attractive simply because of the challenge and satisfaction in knowing you succeded where others failed.

I have always been fond of C. bispinosus but the ones I have seen lately are no where near as nice as some I have seen in the past. Much more yellow and washed out. I guess the locality is the problem.

Cheers.

I have never kept one longer than 2 weeks, but they seem to be hardy, at least when holding. I suppose having live rock would be the great advantage for feeding them. They are grazers on the reef and usually have small territores within the rubble (LR) that they feed off.

mine is doing great so far, looks spectacular, I overfed tonight to make sure he go some of the food which he fed on so, so far so good..he is a little small vs. the rest of my fish but if he makes it two weeks I think he will be okay...a spectacular fish all around, I may try to get rid of my sebae clowns if they keep messing with all my new additions....

I have had a potters angel since 2002 -

He is fat and happy. He grazes mostly off of the liverock, and eats whatever mysis he can get. He'll also pick at nori from time to time. He is my favorite fish, and he is very hardy.

In a tossule with my anthias he lost a chunk of his face - You would have never guessed it. IMO potters are sturdy little fishes once they are established in the reef.

As for reef safe, if I underfeed I see little white circles on my plating montiporas. I have never seen him go after my clam.

Use caution, but I wouldn't give him up.

I had a Potters for over four years until I lost it in a tank mishap. It was a really beautiful fish; its tail glowed under the actinics at night. The Potters was a great eater and very peaceful. No damage to sps in my case. I replaced it with a Multi-colour angel who has a bit of an aggressive attitude, but another very beautiful fish.

Just bought one last night, and I love his coloration. I wasn't awair that they had a hard to get acclimated stigma associated with them.

At any case I am feeding mysis, Cyclopeeze and some formula 1 pellets. As of right now he is hiding in the lower parts of my tank just kinda darting around and picking on algae and copopods I guess. I see him from time to time just pick something off the rock or go under some rocks and go hunting.

Is there any need to get algae strips and a clip like you would for a tang? Will they eat that or do I need to stick to feeding Mysis?

By the way my tank has one other fish it is a False Perc and it stays in his anemone so the potters is now the king of the tank.

Yes I can attest that Potter's angels are hard to acclimate. I have tried 2, but only had one to live. The Potter's and my secretive wrasse (worst name ever for this wrasse, he always come right up front and center in my tank) are like buddies. Although half the time they part, but the other half of the time they are never 6" away from each other.

I have had mine for 4-5 months, and it does not eat any prepared foods for it's life. It only eats the algae off of my LR. That's my experience with Potter's angels.

So should I start harvesting algae from my sump and putting it in my tank, or will they pick the hair algae that is currently on some of my rocks off?

I've only had my potters since last oct. I was expecting a fish that would be shy and hard to see for the first few weeks, what I got was the most outgoing fish in my tanks. He did take a few days to start eating what I put in the tank but now eats everything.

I also have 3 green chromis in that tank and I think it helps make the other fish feel safe, because even my yellow tang is very laid back and out going:D

Anything special that you used to feed it? Is there a favorite food?

What started my potter eating was frozen cyclopeeze, now he eats frozen mysis and cyclopeeze, spirolina and osi marine flake, and I always have sheets of nori in the clip that he picks at all day.

Mine loves Mysis, Prime Reef Flake and was really happy with the Formula 1 cube I fed tonight. He'll pick at a nori clip as well.

He's the fattest fish in my tank. He picks at the live rock all day.

I feel that a secret to their success is to have an established tank. I didn't get mine until my tank was one year old.

My tank has been up for over a year now, and some of the rock has been with me for over 3 years. The only issue I see right now is that most of my rock is currently out of my tank and in a bin cooking. That ofcoase will be put to an end this comming weekend as I will be reintroducing the rock back to the tank. I am hoping that this won't phase him to much. But I am going to get a some Seaweed selects or Nori for him this weekend and also keep up with the mysis.
