Powder Blue Hybrid Tang

Dogmatic Dinosaur
I recently got a teriffic Powder Blue hybrid tang from another local hobbist. I cannot get a good pic, but I was wondering why type of hybrid this could be? What other fish cross with the powder blue?

It is probably not a cross, there are many species of tang that are not usually for sale in the aquarium industry. A picture or good description would be help out. Try looking up picture of all the different species of tang. You might have a Gold Rim Tang (Acanthurus glaucopareius), they are kinda common and are sold as "hybrid" even though they are not.

I've seen quite a few Powder blue/ gold rim crosses over the years in person. It's funny most people think they are ugly because the blue is more muted on them. I think the marine center has a pic of one.

You could not mistake this fish for powder brown/white cheek/goldrim, etc.

It has a solid blue body and even blue under the chin where the BPT has white. The top fins are yellow and so are the bottom.

It is a hybrid but we cannot remember what it is crossed with. I have seen people with them on here and was hoping that somebody knew.

The powder blue does hybridize with the gold rim surgeon (Acanthurus nigricans... formerly classified as Acanthurus glaucopareius) I have one of these specimens which are not too rare anymore. Each specimen shows variation as is common with most hybrids. The powder blue does not hybridize with anything else, although the goldrim does hybridize also with A. achilles in Hawaii, which is much rarer in the industry...
My powder blue/goldrim hybrid is shown in this photo...

And an image of a wild gold rim/achilles hybrid...

Copps

Copps - thanks. That is exactly what I have except the area under the chin and the "ear" area are the same color as the body.

This mutt is a cool fish so far.

Thanks.

Yeah, I've been seeing these fairly regularly at a local place for a couple of years, and the variations go from striking to bland, showing different combinations of the two species...

It gets along with the other tangs too. I was worried about the powder blue, but so far, so good.
