Powder Blue Tang

Nami19,
The first PBT I ever had was in a tank w/o UV. He did well for about a year without Ich. He ended up dieing not because of illness but becuase I had to move 2 times within 2 months. The stress of the tank moves got the best of him. I definitely think you can do it w/o UV, but you must use seaweeds everyday in addition to meaty frozen foods. I truely think that their diet is the determining factor to success or failure of the species.

Thanks jwreeffner, I've been on the fence about buying a UV because of the mixed reports I've been reading. I've had other tangs, hippo and yellow, that have done very well for me, no signs of parasites.

I'm getting my PBT next week from a LFS, he's been eating nori/mysis and has been there for week now. I figure if he's ok by next week, then he's a healthy specimen.

Here is mine. He was the most aggressive fish I have but has actually mellowed out. I have a Scopas that is far more aggressive. He did go after my blenny some in the first 4 months.

When i got him he was in poor health, very skinny. I QT'd him and i do run a UV on the QT tank. I do not run a UV on my display. He did indeed have Ich. I attribute his mellowing out to his better health, the healthier/fatter he gets the more laid back he becomes. He is an VERY active swimmer and needs room. Wish i had an 8' tank....LoL

Nami19,
I would definitely recommend a UV if you can afford the cost and can implement it into your tank's filtration. It certainly would do more good than harm for your fish. Yes there have been conflicting reports about adverse effects with Reef Tanks, but I haven't seen any proper studies done yet to indicate that they are truely detrimental to corals. If you have a fuge plumbed seperately from the UV, than there is even less to worry about. I have had excellent luck with my UV in my FOWLR and will get a UV if I ever decide on setting up a reef tank.

I don't run UV and I have never had a problem with Ich or any other parasite on my PBT or any other fish.

think its ok to have a PBT in a 75g?

i would QT him and add him last.

he would be the only tang in the tank.
what do you think?

Yeah I think so. My PBT is in a 55 currently. I added him towards the end of the fish list. I will be moving him to a larger tank in about a year though.

ok, so hopefully the one(i might) be getting would do well in a 29g.

i would have an airstone, and small heater in there. ill get a nice piece of baserock in there for him/her to hide.

thanks

I have one close to 4 yrs he's about 4.5" now. He got ick for the first few weeks ( I didn't QT him) then he overcame it and has been healthy ever since. He's a fat a$$, actually all my tangs are fat. They eat mainly goldfish flakes

Yeah, transport is always rough on the little guys. Once they get established, if you keep water quality good and a good hervibore diet you are usually out of the woods.

I would not keep one in a 75. They say that most tangs should be kept in a 6' long tank. This tang is no exception. They are very active and need that extra room. It will not last long in a 75.

Finally got my PBT, he was in the LFS on hold for 3 weeks, small guy (3 inches from mouth to tail!!), which is perfect for my 75G until I upgrade to a 180G in the fall.

Quick question, he eats like a pig - picking off the rocks and constantly grazing on Nori, but since I picked him up on Friday, he spends half his time chasing/attacking his reflection off the glass, has anyone ever experienced this before with these fish? I 've seen other fish do it for a day or two, but it's been 4 days now. It's kind of funny.
