Powder blue Tang!

hi all i have a 48" x 24" x 12"h tank its minimalist and bb i will attach a pic of it :)
can i have a pbt in this tank with 2 clownfish, some blennies and some banggi cardinals.
it is a 60g tank, its a 120g in half so will this give the tang the same swimming space as the 120g?

That's not nearly enough swimming space for a tang, especially a PBT. It's going to get severely nasty with your other fish; I wouldn't do anything short of a 6ft. tank for one.
 
Powder Blues need more space than most tangs IMO. They are very active swimmers and one of the more aggressive tangs.
 
A 12" tank is too shallow for tangs IMO. They do need some up and down space. Also your tank isn't big enough for one even if it was a 120 gallon tank because PBTs need at least a 6' long tank. Bangaii cardinals can only be kept singly or in bonded/mated pairs, so don't get more than two. I am not sure how multiple blennies will do so I won't comment on that. Look into some fish that stay smaller than most tangs. A kole or tomini tang may work, but nothing much bigger.
 
Any of the Acanthurus family is going to get aggressive in a smaller tank. With that said, in a tank the size mentioned above, I would go with one of the Ctenochaetus genus like a Kole, Chevron, or Yellow Eye tang.
 
There is no difference between 4ft and 6ft when comparing swimming room to the ocean so as long as you upgrade when he gets bigger it should be fine. If your talking a full size one then obviously probably not a good idea, but if it's small then it should be fine for awhile.

It really just depends on if you want to do it or not, no one can talk to fish to know exactly what they want. Give them good water parameters and tankmates who they aren't aggressive towards and go with it!

That's the issue. In a 4 foot tank, never mind one that's only 12" front to back, a Powder Blue Tang WILL be aggressive towards its tankmates. It's way too small of a tank for this fish, so please don't tell people to do it.
 
is your tank the deep blue? i have the same tank that is finished cycling....i think im getting a kole for it....is asked snorvich in his fish thread and he said it would be fine.....

A kole tang and a powder blue tang are very different in nature. A powder blue tang is much more active than a kole tang is. In addition to this the powder blue gets quite a bit bigger than the kole. Very different fish altogether.

It's still 50% larger, and significantly more room (IMO, 6' is too small anyway, if you want to keep it long term).

As for the upgrade argument, just wait until you do it. IME, most planned upgrades never happen, and those that do tend to be very delayed.
 
every fish is different, there isnt a set thing saying itll be aggressive.

I know a guy with a 20 year old hippo thats lived entire life in a standard 4 foot 75, so maybe the experts dont really know what tangs need..I still want to talk to someone who can talk to fish so they can ask mine how they are doing.

I managed a LFS and a customer brought in a goldfish that could barely move in his ten gallon tank. The fish was over 12 inches. It was absolutely ridiculous!

My point is that just because it survives doesn't mean the fish is happy or even leading a quality life.

There are many experts on this site that know MUCH more than me and much more than you. I've had my reef for 7 years and I'm still learning from people on this site. This is why I trust their opinions. Maybe you should too. :D

Interesting. Hippos can get up to 1 feet. How big is your friend's hippo? I can't imagine a 1 foot hippo in a 4 foot tank. Doesn't sound like there would be a lot of room. Is he significantly smaller than 1 foot?
 
I trust people's opinions on here on everything except fish. It's all personal preference, some people have success mixing certain fish some don't.

The hippo is 10 inches, is the only fish in tank though. I'm pretty sure if it's lived over 20 years it's been healthy enough. I hope one day I have 20 year old fish. He basically has the same opinion as me though, every fish is different and there is no set standard on tank sizes or tank mates. Some work, some don't.

Maybe we should try cramming you into a closet and making you live there 20 years. I'm sure if we fed you and changed your water, you would be healthy enough to make it 20 years...:headwally:
 
Can you ... yes, for a short period of time. Should you? No, not in my experience. PBT are very prone to ich, and in a tank that size the fish is unlikely to stay healthy.
