Powder Brown Tang

I purchased a PBT from Pet Mart a while back. I have had him about 4-5 months. He has ich and had it when I bought him. He is in my 210 with a Grouper, Large Naso, 2 Yellow Damsels and a Yellow Tang. All other fish are perfectly healthy.
Robthorn suggested cleaner shrimp and neon Gobys. I had 3 cleaner shrimp in there but the Grouper got a hold of em. Would the goby's work or do you guys think they would be lunch for the grouper too?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

If you are serious about treating it you will need to treat all the other fish and leave the tank fallow ( no fish) for 6 weeks at least. Otherwise if you treat just the PBT and return it to the tank it will just be reinfected. I think the grouper would probably eat any neon gobies also.

Ya, the grouper will eat the gobies. Their tinier than the cleaner shrimp.

If you get rid of the grouper the combo of cleaner shrimp and neon gobies work pretty well. It will never eliminate the ich, but it does keep it under control. You may never see the ich anymore (it'll still be in the tank, though)

ich stays dormant in every tank it seems. never add anything for a year then all of a sudden you skip a couple water changes and you have a tang with ich.
mike I did not know you had a cleaner eating grouper. I wouldn't think it would eat them unless they were ill but every tank has a story. groupers are big eaters and starvation will turn them. not that your not feeding just that maybe he was a little hungrier than you thought. darned pigs these fish are.

My grouper jumps and hits the glass top when I get too close. Maybe I am not feeding enough... I am really thinking about getting rid of him (trading) or selling for 20 bucks... I was hoping he would eat the damsels but I think they are too quick for him.
The tang has survived this far and should be ok. I have been doing regular water changes and was hoping that he would be healthy enough eventually for the ich not to come back... These water changes in the 210 are killing me lol.

Just curious, what type of grouper is it?

Its a blue dot(Cephalopholis argus). Its redish in color and has bright blue dots on it. It will change color when it gets older i think. Really nice fish but mean as hell.

due to my system configuration once a fish goes in its not coming out unless its dead or jumps. due to this i also use cleaner shrimp and the gobies. have not lost a fish yet to ick. they do there job very well.

I think it is the argus one. More of a reddish color. I wanted the orange one but all the ones I saw at the time did not look healthy.

Do you have a UV Sterilizer? I put one on my tank a while back and it seems to be very helpful with keeping the tank healthy and also killing unwated things like Ich.......

Mine is a Turbo Twist 38w

Good Luck

Ditto with the UV,I had one running while ago with 3 differents Tangs and never saw Ich.

I'm having the same problem with my Gold Rim tang. And he's passed it on to my Kole... I'm counting the minutes till my UV sterilizer gets here...
