Powder Brown Tang

Which one are you referring too? Acanthurus nigricans, or A. japonicus?

I had a nigricans for about 3 years a couple of years back, was a great fish, but was getting to big for my 75, so I had to sell it. When/if I ever get a bigger tank I will get another one. They are suppose to be harder of the two to keep, but mine was healthy as a horse from day one.

i had one. he killed about 3 of my fish. gave him to my lfs.
their so pretty thoughh.
depends what your putting him in i guess and with what.
=)

Very tricky...

It's one of those fish that I would love to keep. No room though. I rescued this one. Keep it for a little while...

I was looking at the Acanthurus japonicus from live aquaria. The only other fish the swim around all the time that I am going to have is blue chromis, and 2 clowns (either percs or black percs).

Is the Acanthurus Nigricans a more peaceful one?

The Acanthurus Nigricans are the more peaceful ones. There both a tough fish to keep but getting one from a good source like liveaquaria will help alot.

I have one. Was on sale at a local petco I couldn't resist. I like his temperament. He does not initiate aggresion but can hold his own when bullied by my hippo and scopas. They do not really fight.

So, what kind is mine?

Beatiful fish, I have kept them and know others who have as well. Seems hit or miss but def easier then some other tangs. Worth a shot in my opinion.....

Yours is an A. japonicus.

Here is a picture of my A nigricans right before I sold it ( in a holding tank )

Just corious, but I dont see many people with powder brown tangs. Is there any reason why?

I have one, ( A. japonicus) very nice addition to my reef tank. Very peaceful and will eat right out of my hand.

He does chase my 3 blue chromis though, but never caches them.

I have an A. Japonicus. Very peaceful and beautiful tang. Probably underrated in the tang community. I keep him with 3 chromis, 2 GSM's and a coral beauty.

that's the one tang I want for my 120 when it gets up and running, from the few I've seen in person I'd rather have the japonicus that any of the others really

I also have an A japonicus. When I got him, he wouldn't eat anything other than Ogo and my tank just didn't have enough algae to support him. Now, after several months, he's eating prepared foods and is growing.

I got him from liveaquaria.com and he was an incredibly healthy looking fish from day one. He's been pretty passive in my tank, but, then again, he was the last fish that I added. He's even okay with the smaller Ctenochaetus tang I have in with him.

I had an Acanthurus Japonicus in my old 180 that i got from Live Aquaria. he grew pretty quick and established himself as the boss of my tank. I eventually had to remove it because the aggression became too much with my other tangs. Beautiful fish though.

If I got a small one (1"-2") do you think he would be fine in a 4' long 75 gallon tank for 3-4 years at which time I will move him to a 6'-8' long tank? How fast do they grow?

Once he is acclimated and eating regularly he will grow quickly. In 2 years time he will be probably double the size from when you got him. Who knows, in 2 years you'll probably be upgrading anyway, and now you have a reason to. HTH
