Powder coat look-a-like?

All paint looks the same.. depends on how its applied... there are many ways to find out if its paint or powder coat, the quickest and easiest is rub a spot with MEK, (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) if the paint rubs off,, its paint (or poorly applied powder coat) if nothing happens very good chance its powder coat. Depending what is painted you can try scraping a penny on it,, if it scrapes off, its paint,, if it doesn't its powder coating...

Is there a spray paint that creates the look of powder coating?

Melamine paint that is applied with a foam roller can get that smooth flow look of powder coating. It takes two or more coats with a full 24 hour curing time between applications.

With spray paint, many very thin coats is the secret. A light spray that doesn't cover completly, repeated 10 - 20 times gives the best result, if you have the time.

JW- what are you going to use this for, is it reef related? sorry i dont have an answer for you though...

i think he's looking for an alternative to the powder coating look, without powder coating. not telling the difference.

personally, i dont think anything really comes close. you can just "tell" whether or not its powder coated. ive been in workin on cars for a while, and have dealt with what PC looks like.

Ya, powder coating is baked on at a fairly high temp. (400 deg. for 20 min.) thats what makes it so durable, the metal is heated in the process of baking and the powder coating is bonded to the metal. What are you planning on painting? There's probably plenty of places around where you are at that could powder coat it. I usually powder coat all my 'projects'. That and it takes the heat fairly well.
