Power Heads

So here is a newbie question for you. How do you know where to aim your power heads? Does it make a difference?

It's basically just trial & error, but you want to create an environment where there are no dead spots within the tank. Just as an example, having a couple power heads up top at opposite ends of the tank seems to be pretty popular. Not only will it agitate the surface for better gas exchange, but the middle of the tank where the two pumps converge will be very chaotic. These currents will then subside as they work their way towards the sides.

Also, if you are using sand, have them where they are blowing just enough to get the nasty stuff moving around, but don't point at the sand or you will have a sand storm.

It definitely seems to be trial and error. I am trying to find the right spots so I don't have sand dunes and bare bottom spots in a given part of the tank. Still trying to get it right.

I feel your pain. Been struggling to find the 'sweet' spot for my power head, but kept creating huge sand dunes and/or bare bottom areas. So I decided to get a less powerful power head and will be receiving it Monday. Hopefully that will make it easier.

Maybe you also have too fine of sand?

Also make sure to get one that the power is adjustable so you do not have to get a different one if it is too powerful.

I have on power head on the back glass pointing at an angle down the front of the glass to the other side. And the other one is on the side pointing towards the back glass they seem to meet in the middle and make a nice whirlpool effect so the food just stays right there when I feed.

Thats pretty cool and a great idea.
