Power is out

Thanks John. Power has been restored. Still a long way to go before it's over. Fingers crossed. Good luck everyone.

It's definitely a good investment even if it's just a small one to run basic life support. Better backup is nice to but will only take you so far.
I still need to wire my generator into the house breaker panel. One of these day.

How long does everyone wait to hook up the generator after loss of power?

Last time I had a tank and lost power (Sandy) I didn't have a generator. So I didn't have a tank for almost four years. We have one now and can wire up the house. We haven't lost power since I've set the tank back up in August, but I would wait about half an hour. I think usually by then you'll know if it's a real failure or a 15 minute maintenance thing. As for the tanks, they will be fine for 30 minutes. I haven't thought about it at all until just now, but my bigger concern is, what do you do at night? You can't leave the generator running all night long, can you? Anyone thought of that?

The battery back up on my MP40 kick on as soon as power is lost and can run for 72 hours (so I am told) That will keep water flowing inside the tank!

Never thought of that. Guess all you need is water and heat. Thanks for the tip, looking into it :)

EDIT: Can't find specs on the backup. Any reason I don't want to use a big UPS like I might have for computers?

A computer UPS will work but not last as long as the 12V battery Tunze and Vortec uses, they drop the voltage from 24 to 12 and run the pumps at very low speed to preserve the battery.

I'll usually find out how long the powers going to be out before I start the generator, as long as the battery pumps are running and the temps hold I'm not to worried if it's without power for an hour or 2.

Last time I had to worry about that it was over 2 weeks. I wouldn't worry over a couple of hours, but longer is a problem. Thanks very much for the info. 40 years in this game and you learn something new every day

I have a new generator in the shed that I purchased 4 years ago. Its a pretty big one, and has wheels, etc. The problem for me is that I would need at least an hour to unpack the shed to get to it. I'll need to get pass lawnmower, 2 snow plows, a ton of garden equipments, and a BBQ grill. Then I'll need help to carry it out.

My point is, I will need to be out of power for at least 2 hours before I decide to take action.
Fortunately I have 3 Battery backups linked to 2 Vortechs that hopefully will last for few days.
While flow is a main concern, temperature is the next biggest issue.

I just bought a little plastic shed thing to house my generator. Sits up against the deck, in range to power up the inlet for the whole house. Bought it at Lowe's. Fits a decent sized unit with room for a few gas cans. Well worth the money ($175?) So I don't have a 2 hour project to empty out the shed
