Power outage...Acropora Deswalii bleaching

mcoomer

Rat Bastard!
I lost power to my tank on Saturday morning and wasn't able to find the problem and get it fixed until Monday afternoon. I ran the recirc pump off an extension cord but didn't think about hooking up the heater. When I got finished wiring a new water resistant receptacle and got things back on I found that the tank was at 73F. Within minutes of getting the lights on all my corals had polyps out, and next day all had their normal color. I set the controller to slowly bring up the temp. Everything seemed to be getting back on track.

Today, I looked in my tank and my A. Deswalii is almost completely bleached. The only color is on one small stalk and the rims of the coralytes. All other corals look great. Is there anything that I can do to help this coral or am I pretty much resigned to letting nature run its course.

Thanks,
Mike

Just leave it alone, cut yuor light cycle to half its daily amount for the first two days. and keep your levels constant and that coral will slowly start to color up.

i wish for the best of luck but thats just the risk we take taking in corals. My power was out for a few days on the east coast and this happened a few weeks after an alk swing burnt most of my corals down to the base just - made me realize that i should give out pieces of my corals to my close friends incase this happens again.

Looking at the coral I think that things may have stabilized with it. The color is still not good but it's not worse either, as I would expect if it were in fact receding. Maybe I'll get lucky and get out of this without losing any corals. Beyond that, I wonder why this happened to my Deswalii and not to something that grows like a weed. Murphy's law I suppose.
