Power Outage? Who You Going To Call?

KMP

Wag More; Bark Less
Or, more importantly, who's going to call you?

I've always been intrigued with finding products that were not intended to be used in the aquatic hobby, but can be very useful in safeguarding our investments. Introducting the Automatic Phone Out Alarm:

Automatic Phone-Out Home Monitoring System (Power Outage, Freezing Temperatures). Keypad base unit plugs into phone line and electrical outlet. Internal temperature and power outage sensors continually monitor home for two alarm conditions: temperatures below 45 degrees F and power outages lasting more than either 5 or 30 minutes (users' choice). Base unit calls up to three telephone numbers anywhere in North America when problem occurs. Identifies specific problem with voice message followed by user instructions for remote deactivation. Battery included.

Yes, there are some high-end controllers that will send you an email alert; but, if you already have a controller, spend a lot of time away from home and would like a phone call when the power goes out - this is your gadget!

That is one interesting item. I might be taking advantage of your hound dog-like searching skills for reef stuff and pick up one of those.

Kind of funny because last night I went to bed at 9:45 ('cause that's how I roll) and at 11pm my daughter came in and said that the powers out.
A goose had hit a power line at the course and power was out to the whole course, but not to any of the other houses around the course. So, had she not mentioned it, I might well have not figured it out until 4:30, when I wake. I have a vortec batt. backup (which worked fine), but it was very cold last night, so the tank would have been quite cold by morning.

I called PG&E at 11, set the generator up to the tank and waited. They came and fix the issue at 1:30am, so all was fine. However, it made me think how easily a outage can be missed and cause problems. With this little baby, my daughter could have been asleep too and I still would have gotten a call. Pretty nice, even when your not away on a trip or something.

Ya obviously wouldn't want to enable the temp feature though or you would get calls every night.

Neil, that's just another reason to get one of these. I was only thinking about time away from home; but, just as important to know if the power goes out when you are asleep. In either instance, if the power went out right after you leave home or go to sleep, your tank could be down for 6+ hours.

Just thought I would update. I ended up buying one of these and set it up last week. This saturday our power went out at midnight and the alarm sounded so I was able to get the generator on sooner than next morning. Good thing because it was pretty cold.

I was at home so it really didn't make any difference, but on my way to the tank my iphone rang with the notice, so did my wife's! That will be nice when we are gone for spring break.

As a side, I tested the leak sensor and it works perfectly too! Pretty happy overall with Kenny's searching skills:inlove:

What timing - glad to hear it worked as advertised. This last power outage was the first stress free venture for me. I woke when the power went out - checked the tank and the Vortecs were humming along in their battery backup. Went back to bed. Four hours later the power came on - temp had only dropped to 73.5.
