Power outlet for new tank

Hi,

I have a question on the power supply for a 60G + 20G sump reef tank.

So the equipment are pretty standard..

1) return pump [DC]
2) heater [200W + 100W]
3) skimmer
4) refug light.
5) LED light.
6) ATO

A total of 7 plugs that needed power.
I dont intend to do APEX.

So if I have an extension power strip powering all these equipment, will it
overload the outlet if all were to operate at the same time?

Please advise. Thanks

I would still install a GFCI on the outlet you intend to use. Cheap, easy to install insurance policy.

OK. thank you. I will change the socket to a GFCI. Seems simple to address. thank you.
BTW, wandering if there is any specific power strip that is more "waterproof" or
pretty much any power strip is fine. Do I need something with surge protection? thanks.

The best way to see how much power you are using/need is to simply add up the wattage ratings of all your equipment...

In the US a 15A circuit can do about 1500W... Anything more than that and you need another circuit.

And yes all direct line powered equipment must be on a gfci circuit for your safety

You should always mount the power strips far enough aaway from any water/salt spray and inspect them regularly.

Surge protection is not required but can't hurt.

So a breaker on the power strip is not enough?
I have to connect the power strip with a breaker, to a CFGI outlet correct?
[Double protection?]
thanks.

You want gfci protection...A regular breaker does not have such protection built in..
You can buy a gfci breaker or install an outlet at the point of use or some power strips have gfci protection..
Installing a gfci outlet is quite easy..
Just turn off the breaker supplying that outlet and add the gfci outlet (and usually you need to change the cover plate too ) . Takes all of 10 minutes if that..

A Kill A Watt is a useful tool for measuring current draw. I believe it also is available from Lowes or any other big box store, as well as your local hardware.
