Powerhead Placement - 40G Breeder

I have 4 powerheads currently in my 40G Breeder tank. I have 2 currently running (Hydor 750-850GPH) and 2 currently off (Aqueon 700's). I have them currently placed about 2/3 of the way to the bottom (3 of them) and 1 of them half way up in the tank. One in each corner facing the length of the tank, pointing slightly upward.

My question is, how do you have yours placed (pointed which way) and how many? I have corals that like moderate flow but don't like to be directly blasted. I also have the return that creates quite a bit of flow itself.

Thanks for your advice.

There is no one who can give you a exact answer everyone has a different tank and coral and rock work you will just have to play with the flow until you are happy with it and most importantly the coral is happy with it

yup...
This is one of those questions that being there in front of the tank is the only way to get an answer applicable to your tank.. Visually you are in the best position to answer your question..
Everything else is just generalizations..

I agree it is based on what I feel, I guess I was just looking for some advice on how others have theirs setup. I want to avoid dead spots in the tank, but I dont want to blast the water or coral. Corals seem to be happy, but I didnt know if there was some trains of thought on how much flow is too much.

In general we routinely state powerheads should be 30x display tank size in flowrate in GPH for your typical fish only/simple mixed reef setup.. Some run up to 50x or so..
Then those with SPS only barebottom/high flow tanks are at 75-100x..
30x is the good starting point..
So a 100G tank would have powerheads totaling 3000GPH

Thank you. Very helpful!

FWIW, I have two MP10 mounted on the back glass of my 40G. They are the only flow in the tank; no sump, no skimmer, nor reactor. They are mounted about 12 inches from the side corners and apart from each other.

They're on "reef-crest" mode at most 40% of max power. No idea how that would translate into GPH, but my zoas, LPS and three RBTA's are growing.
